Pasteurella haemolytica serotype 1 was transferred daily for 128 serial passages on both unsupplemented brain heart infusion agar and the same basal medium supplemented with bovine blood, horse serum, and yeast extract. Repeatedly transferred cultures were shown to retain the ability to produce both capsular material and leukotoxin. Furthermore, intact organisms were found to be as toxic in vit...

Mice immunized with the potassium thiocyanate extract of Pasteurella haemolytica, serotype 1, were found to resist a challenge infection of P. multocida type A, thus demonstrating cross-protection. This finding was further supported by the finding that an antiserum directed against the potassium thiocyanate extract of P. haemolytica was bactericidal to P. multocida and vice versa.

An appreciable level of immunity from intraperitoneal infection with Pasteurella haemolytica was established in mice by using a vaccine prepared in a conventional bacteriological culture medium, with aluminium hydroxide gel as adjuvant. The level of immunity could not be elevated by using bacteria grown in tissue culture media, enriched brain heart infusion broth, the addition of serum to the m...

Experiments using different types of antigen-adjuvant preparations were conducted in outbred sheep to compare effects of adjuvants on immune responses. Trinitrophenyl-ovalbumin (TNP-ovalbumin) incorporated in a preparation with nonionic block copolymers elicited high antibody titers to both ovalbumin and TNP. Different humoral immune responses were observed when Pasteurella haemolytica lipopoly...

Mannheimia haemolytica induced pneumonias are only observed in goats, sheep and cattle. The bacterium produces several virulence factors, whose principal ones are lipopolysaccharide and leukotoxin. The latter is cytotoxic only for ruminant leukocytes, a phenomenon that is correlated with its ability to bind and interact with the ruminant beta2-integrin Lymphocyte Function-associated Antigen 1. T...
