Although we have convincing evidence that a black hole bears an entropy proportional to its surface (horizon) area, the “statistical mechanical” explanation of this entropy remains unknown. Two basic questions in this connection are: what is the microscopic origin of the entropy, and why does the law of entropy increase continue to hold when the horizon entropy is included? After a review of so...

I study the structural organization and correlations in very large packings of equally sized spheres, reconstructed in three dimensions with x-ray computed tomography. I show that the geometrical structure can be conveniently studied as a packing of irregular tetrahedra with volume distribution that must decay exponentially with parameters controlled by the conditions of mechanical stability, n...

the second law of thermodynamic (entropy principle) is of special theo-philosophical importance. it seems that this law, which is renowned as “the death of software design” and despite the order in the world, is like an incompatible universal. this article examines the concept of entropy in the three temperature, statistic, and information applications and addresses the contradiction of the sec...

A recent paper by Juntao Huo et al [Chin. Phys. Lett. 39 (2022) 0464011] reported a correlation between the entropy of mixing (and corresponding energy state) and thermal stability mechanical parameters, for three Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni-Be metallic glasses (MG) including high-entropy one (HEMG). The authors dismissed possible compositional contribution to variations parameters studied.

In this paper we introduce the concept of entropy operator for continuous systems of finite topological entropy. It is shown that it generates the Kolmogorov entropy as a special case. If $phi$ is invertible then the entropy operator is bounded with the topological entropy of $phi$ as its norm.

We develop a statistical mechanical interpretation of algorithmic information theory by introducing the notion of thermodynamic quantities, such as free energy, energy, statistical mechanical entropy, and specific heat, into algorithmic information theory. We investigate the properties of these quantities by means of program-size complexity from the point of view of algorithmic randomness. It i...

(Received 13 March 2006, Accepted 23 April 2006) The effects of the mechanical properties of DNA, such as bending, twisting, and bending-twisting interactions on the thermodynamic stability of DNA-dendronized polymer nanoclusters with different conformations in terms of free energy are investigated. The effect of temperature on the free energy is also studied and the values of enthalpy and ent...

Refractory high entropy alloys (HEA), such as BCC NbMoTaW, represent a promising materials class for next-generation high-temperature applications, due to their extraordinary mechanical properties. A characteristic feature of HEAs is the formation of single-phase solid solutions. For BCC NbMoTaW, recent computational studies revealed, however, a B2(Mo,W;Nb,Ta)-ordering at ambient temperature. T...

Conventional wisdom holds that the von Neumann entropy corresponds to thermodynamic entropy, but Meir Hemmo and Orly Shenker have recently argued against this view by attacking Neumann’s argument. I argue Shenker’s arguments fail because of several misunderstandings about statistical-mechanical domains applicability, nature mixed states, role approximations in physics. As a result, their all ca...

The study of mutual entropy (information) and capacity in classical system was extensively done after Shannon by several authors like Kolmogorov [16] and Gelfand [10]. In quantum systems, there have been several definitions of the mutual entropy for classical input and quantum output [5, 11, 12, 17]. In 1983, the author defined [21] the fully quantum mechanical mutual entropy by means of the re...
