A squamous cell lung cancer patient was treated with pneumonectomy. A recurrent lung cancer (adenocarcinoma) was found 45 months later and successfully biopsied and treated with microwave ablation. After 18 months of follow up, no evidence of tumor recurrence was observed.
Image-guided tumor ablation for early stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is an accepted non-surgical treatment that provides excellent local tumor control and favorable survival benefit. This review summarizes the recent advances in tumor ablation for HCC. Diagnostic imaging and molecular biology of HCC has recently undergone marked improvements. Second-generation ultrasonography (US) contras...
Local treatment of bone metastasis (BM) remains controversial in colon-rectum carcinoma for pain control. A patient developed a sacrum BM 4years after a left colectomy for an adenocarcinoma. Metastasis was treated in one session of CT-guided microwave ablation showing good pain control immediately after and on follow-up at four months.
This research is concerned with microwave ablation analyses using a 2.45 GHz four-tine (4T) antenna for hepatic cancer tissue. In the study, three-dimensional finite-element models were utilized to examine the tissue temperature distributions during and after MW ablation. A preliminary study was first carried out with regard to the specific absorption rates along the 4T antenna insertion depths...
PURPOSE To evaluate the efficacy and safety of microwave ablation combined with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization for unresectable large-sized hepotocellular carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS Institutional review board approval and informed consent were obtained. Between May 2004 and December 2006, 34 consecutive patients with large unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (>5 cm) were alt...
Introduction Surgical resection for liver malignancy, has been demonstrated to increase overall survival; although the rate of post-operative mortality was reduced from 20% to 4% in recent years, it remains in any case a procedure that requires experienced and dedicated surgeons so that it can be followed by satisfactory results [1]. Several techniques have been developed and proposed in recent...
BACKGROUND Hepatic resection (HRx) or radiofrequency ablation may be carried out as the first-line treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, we have used intraoperative microwave ablation, named microwave coagulo-necrotic therapy (MCN) as part of our strategy for the treatment of HCCs for more than 15 years. Here we describe the treatment outcomes achieved at our institution as a hi...
