The surface-wave scattering processes responsible, in part, for the optical glory have never been compared with theoretical predictions. Here, THz impulse ranging is used to measure the time domain impulse response of spherical targets with sufficiently high temporal resolution to permit the surfacewave contribution to the total impulse response to be isolated. The first direct experimental com...

We present a novel interferometer for measuring angular distributions of backscattered light. The new system exploits a low-coherence source in a modified Michelson interferometer to provide depth resolution, as in optical coherence tomography, but includes an imaging system that permits the angle of the reference field to be varied in the detector plane by simple translation of an optical elem...

A Bessel beam optical trap is combined with continuous wave cavity ringdown spectroscopy to measure the extinction cross section of individual aerosol particles. Particles, ∼1 μm in size, can be captured indefinitely and processes that transform size or refractive index studied. The measured light extinction induced by the particle is shown to depend on the position of the particle in the cavit...

A simple fabrication method of silver (Ag) nanoislands on ZnO films is presented. Continuous wave and time-resolved photoluminescence and transmission are employed to investigate modifications of visible and UV emissions of ZnO brought about by coupling to localized surface plasmons residing on Ag nanoislands. The size of the nanoislands, determining their absorption and scattering efficiencies...

We present an exact calculation for the scattering of light from a single sphere made of Faraday-active material, to first order in the external magnetic field. We use a recent expression for the T-matrix of a Mie scatterer in a magnetic field to compute the Stokes parameters in single scattering that describe completely flux and polarization of the scattered light.

Chiroptical spectroscopies provide structural analyses of molecules and nanoparticles but they require sample volumes that are incompatible with generating large chemical libraries. New optical tools needed to characterize chirality for the ultrasmall (<1 µl) required in high-throughput synthetic analytical stations chiral compounds. Here we show experimentally a novel photonic effect enables s...

We report on the construction of a Fourier plane imaging system attached to a cell phone. By illuminating particle suspensions with a collimated beam from an inexpensive diode laser, angularly resolved scattering patterns are imaged by the phone's camera. Analyzing these patterns with Mie theory results in predictions of size distributions of the particles in suspension. Despite using consumer ...

We demonstrate that Digital Holographic Microscopy can be used for accurate 3D tracking and sizing of a colloidal probe trapped in a diamond anvil cell (DAC). Polystyrene beads were optically trapped in water up to Gigapascal pressures while simultaneously recording in-line holograms at 1 KHz frame rate. Using Lorenz-Mie scattering theory to fit interference patterns, we detected a 10% shrinkin...

Extinction-to-backscatter ratio or lidar ratio is a key parameter in the issue of backscatter-lidar inversions. The lidar ratio of Asian dust was observed with a high-spectral-resolution lidar and a combined Raman elastic-backscatter lidar during the springs of 1998 and 1999. The measured values range from 42 to55 sr in most cases, with a mean of 51 sr. These values are significantly larger tha...
