We describe an open-source implementation of the Margin Infused Relaxed Algorithm (MIRA) for statistical machine translation (SMT). The implementation is part of the Moses toolkit and can be used as an alternative to standard minimum error rate training (MERT). A description of the implementation and its usage on core feature sets as well as large, sparse feature sets is given and we report exp...
star identification is one of the most important stages in attitude determination with star trackers. this can be performed using matching algorithms between observed stars and a master star catalogue. the main challenge in this approach is to provide a fast and reliable identification algorithm that is sufficiently robust in different pointing views of the star tracker optical system in the sp...
The ISOGAL mid-infrared survey of areas close to the Galactic Plane aims to determine their stellar content and its possible bearing on the history of the Galaxy. The NGC6522 and Sgr I Baade’s Windows of low obscuration towards the inner parts of the Bulge represent ideal places in which to calibrate and understand the ISOGAL colour-magnitude diagrams, which are more difficult to interpret in h...

We describe an object in the Hubble Deep Field North with very unusual near– infrared properties. It is readily visible in Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS images at 1.6μm and from the ground at 2.2μm, but is undetected (with signal–to–noise ∼< 2) in very deep WFPC2 and NICMOS data from 0.3 to 1.1μm. The fν flux density drops by a factor ∼> 8.3 (97.7% confidence) from 1.6 to 1.1μm. The object is c...
The Mira AB interacting binary provides an ideal laboratory for studying mass loss and accretion processes in systems containing an AGB star and a compact accretor, because its components have been resolved and can be studied individually. We present here results from our long term study of accretion processes in this system. These include recent HST observations suggesting that the accretion r...
Context. Aluminium oxide (alumina; Al 2 O 3 ) is a promising candidate as primary dust condensate in the atmospheres of oxygen-rich evolved stars. Therefore, alumina ‘seed’ particles might trigger onset stellar formation and mass loss wind. However, grains not well understood. Aims. We aim to shed light on initial steps cosmic (i.e. nucleation) environments via quantum-chemical bottom-up approa...

This paper describes a new BCP algorithm that improves the performance of Chaff class solvers by reducing the total number of clauses the BCP procedure must evaluate. This is done by: detecting conflicts earlier; evaluating clauses better; and by increasing the controllability of the conflicts which the BCP procedure finds. Solvers like Limmat [10] include a simple Early Conflict Detection BCP ...
