Although musical training has been correlated with modulations of early perceptual and attentional processes, the majority of investigations neglect the possibility of cross modality enhancements. We investigated the effects of musical training by measuring spatial and temporal attention in a temporal order judgment task in auditory, visual, and crossmodal conditions with and without non-predic...
Humans may be faster to avoid negative words than to approach negative words, and faster to approach positive words than to avoid positive words. That is an example of affective stimulus-response (S-R) compatibility. The present study identified the reference valence effects of affective stimulus-response (S-R) compatibility when auditory stimulus materials are used. The researchers explored th...
Mixed presence groupware (MPG) is software that connects both collocated and distributed collaborators together in a shared visual workspace. Our early study of this new genre is that people focus their collaborative energy on collocated partners at the expense of remote partners, which imbalances collaboration. We call this problem presence disparity, caused by the imbalance of awareness exude...
OBJECTIVE Visual and visual-perceptual impairments occur frequently with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and influence occupational performance. This systematic review examined the effectiveness of interventions within the scope of occupational therapy to improve occupational performance for adults with visual and visual-perceptual impairments as a result of TBI. METHOD Medline, PsycINFO, CINAHL...
PURPOSE The purpose of the current study is to investigate the test-retest reproducibility of visual fields (VFs) measured with the MP-3 microperimeter, in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). METHOD VFs were twice measured with the MP-3 and also the Humphrey Field Analyzer, using the 10-2 test grid pattern in both perimeters, in 30 eyes (15 right and 15 left eyes) of 18 RP patients (11 m...
Adopting a mixed response strategy in competitive situations can prevent opponents from exploiting predictable play. What drives stochastic action selection is unclear given that choice patterns suggest that, on average, players are indifferent to available options during mixed-strategy equilibria. To gain insight into this stochastic selection process, we examined how motor preparation was all...
The apparent duration of a visual stimulus has been shown to be influenced by its speed. For low speeds, apparent duration increases linearly with stimulus speed. This effect has been ascribed to the number of changes that occur within a visual interval. Accordingly, a higher number of changes should produce an increase in apparent duration. In order to test this prediction, we asked subjects t...
Visual speech information helps listeners perceive speech in noise. The cues underpinning this visual advantage appear to be global and distributed, and previous research hasn’t succeeded in pinning down simple dimensions to explain the effect. In this study we focus on the temporal aspects of visual speech cues. In comparison to a baseline of auditory only sentences mixed with noise, we tested...
In this paper, independent component analysis (ICA) is used for blind source separation of biomedical signals. Visual and quantitative tests of the ability of ICA to separate signals were performed using a fast ICA algorithm. Results obtained from simulated and FECG signals show that the ICA performance using the whitening matrix of the mixed signals was superior to that of random initial weights.
