We describe here the first case of Nocardia nova spondylodiscitis accompanied by a psoas abscess due to spreading from pulmonary nocardiosis. Nocardia was cultured from all affected sites. After 1 year of an appropriate antimicrobial therapy and a surgical drainage of the abscess that was required, the patient's clinical condition had improved.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are the two dominant Gram-negative -positive species, respectively, isolated from patients with contact lens-related bacterial keratitis. The clinical features of keratitis vary, such that timely differential diagnosis can be challenging, which may cause a delay in resulting poorer outcome. This review aims to explore current understanding immuno...

Microbial keratitis is a major cause of corneal opacity and loss of vision worldwide. Ulcerative microbial keratitis remains a leading cause of blindness worldwide. The most common causative organisms are bacteria, although fungi and protists can also cause keratitis. Bacterial keratitis is potentially more devastating ocular infection. The most common bacteria associated with corneal ulcer are...

PURPOSE To describe a case of bilateral herpes simplex keratitis accompanying chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). DESIGN Observational case report. CASE REPORT An 11-year-old boy with myelocytic leukemia underwent allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. He developed symptoms of the skin, eyes, and mouth, and lip biopsy indicated chronic GVHD. The soil-borne pathogen Nocardia sp. causes severe cutaneous, pulmonary, and central nervous system infections. Against them, co-trimoxazole (SXT) constitutes the mainstay of antimicrobial therapy. However, some Nocardia strains show resistance to SXT, but the underlying genetic basis is unknown. We investigated the presence of genetic resistance determinants and class 1-3 integrons in 76 SXT-r...

A 39-year-old man with a history of injection drug abuse was given a diagnosis of Nocardia asteroides native aortic valve endocarditis, and he required valve replacement therapy, despite having received potent antimicrobial therapy. This is the first reported proven case of native valve endocarditis due to Nocardia species.

Nocardia cerebral abscesses are rare intracranial lesions. They account for only 1% to 2% of all brain abscesses. They are important in immunocompromised patients, but rarely occur in immunocompetent hosts. Here, we present a case of multiple primary brain abscesses with Nocardia in an immunocompetent patient, who was treated successfully with oral antibiotic therapy.

Nocardia species are ubiquitous soil-borne organisms that most commonly cause invasive disease in patients with defective cell-mediated immunity. We report a case of recurrent Nocardia sepsis in a patient with sickle cell disease and chronic iron overload, who was undergoing high-dose infusions of deferoxamine through a central venous catheter.

We present the case of a patient with an infection by Nocardia which manifested itself with monocular endophthalmitis. Nocardia infection is not common and ocular involvement is one of the most uncommon presentations. In these cases it is very important to make an early diagnosis and intensive treatment to prevent the visual prognosis.
