The paper deals with a class of image filters in which the evolutionary approach consistently produces excellent and innovative results. Furthermore, a method is proposed that leads to the automatic design of easily testable circuits. In particular we evolved “salt and pepper” noise filters, random shot noise filters, Gaussian noise filters, uniform random noise filters, and edge detectors.

Many climatic and geophysical processes are cyclostationary and exhibit appreciable cyclic (monthly, daily, etc.) variation of their statistics in addition to interannual uctuations. Utilization of this nested variation of statistics will lead to a better chance of detecting a signal in such a varying background noise eld especially when the signal is strongly phase locked with the nested cycle...

The operation of the nervous system relies in great part on the firing activity of neurons. This activity exhibit significant fluctuations on a variety of time scales as well as a number of memory effects. We discuss examples of stochastic and memory effects that have arisen in our neuronal modeling work on a variety of systems. The time scales of these effects range from milliseconds to second...

Various binary and non-binary modulation techniques, in conjunction with appropriate detection techniques, are compared in terms of their spectral efficiencies and signal-to-noise ratio requirements, assuming amplified spontaneous emission is the dominant noise source. These include (a) pulse-amplitude modulation with direct detection, (b) differential phase-shift keying with interferometric de...

We address the role of the phase-insensitive trusted preparation and detection noise in the security of a continuous-variable quantum key distribution, considering the Gaussian protocols on the basis of coherent and squeezed states and studying them in the conditions of Gaussian lossy and noisy channels. The influence of such a noise on the security of Gaussian quantum cryptography can be cruci...

This paper proposes an new iterative method to recover the signals corrupted by impulsive noise in MIMO-OFDM systems over In-home PLC. In this iterative technique, preliminary decisions are made to get the impulsive noise detection algorithm for finding the locations and amplitudes of the impulses, and then signal estimation block for approximation the signals for two-branch 2*2 MIMO-OFDM at th...

OBJECTIVE To test the hypothesis that vibrotactile detection thresholds in older adults, patients with stroke, and patients with diabetic neuropathy can be significantly reduced with the introduction of mechanical noise. DESIGN A randomized controlled study. SETTING A university research laboratory. PARTICIPANTS Twelve healthy elderly subjects (age range, 67-85y), 5 patients with stroke (...

In the low-temperature regime where the thermal polarization P is of order unity and spin-lattice relaxation is “frozen out,” resonator-induced relaxation can be used to polarize a nuclear-spin sample for optimal detection sensitivity. We characterize the potential of resonator-induced polarization for enhancing the sensitivity of nuclear-magnetic-resonance spectroscopy. The sensitivities of tw...

Chapeau-Blondeau, François, Stochastic Resonance and Optimal Detection of Pulse Trains by Threshold Devices, Digital Signal Processing 9 (1999), 162–177. The nonlinear detection by a threshold device of a periodic train of soliton-like pulses embedded in arbitrarily distributed white noise is studied. A theoretical model is developed which provides expressions for the signal-to-noise ratio at t...

In this paper, we propose a decision-based, signal-adaptive median filtering algorithm for removal of impulse noise. Our algorithm achieves accurate noise detection and high SNR measures without smearing the fine details and edges in the image. The notion of homogeneity level is defined for pixel values based on their global and local statistical properties. The cooccurrence matrix technique is...
