The decomposition procedure suggested for magnetotelluric (MT) data in a companion paper is illustrated by examples. Adjacent pairs of stations are examined to test for common features in their MT response. The method analyzes the real and quadrature parts of an impedance tensor separately, and the results for the real and quadrature parts are compared, and in some cases combined, at the end. V...

We describe a case of bilateral basal ganglia hemorrhage after a lightning strike to the head documented by a CT scan. Review of the literature shows this to be the most common brain imaging finding that can be attributed to a lightning strike. Several mechanistic theories are discussed, with the most plausible one being related to preferential conduction pathways through the brain.

Death or injury to whales from vessel strike is one of the primary threats to whale populations worldwide. However, quantifying the rate of occurrence of these collisions is difficult because many incidents are not detected (particularly from large vessels) and therefore go unreported. Furthermore, varying reporting biases occur related to species identification, spatial coverage of reports and...

Strike activity in Spain is unusually high compared to most other developed countries and, moreover, it has remained at a high level for the last decade, whilst strike rates have been falling in most other countries. One possible explanation for this poor strikes record is Spanish labour law with respect to industrial disputes which may be too permissive, or have remained permissive whilst othe...

In most of the surviving patients after a lightning strike, audiovestibular abnormalities have been reported. The most frequently reported type of abnormalities is a tympanic membrane perforation with hearing loss and external ear canal burn. However a sensor neural hearing loss and mixed type hearing loss can also occur, but these occur rarely. A nineteen-year-old female patient had, after a l...

Current procedures in the planning of Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) strikes in the United States Navy require an operator (the Strike Coordinator) to match available missiles to preplanned missions. Such strike planning is essentially manual, with little help from any computerized tool or decision-support system. This causes high workload for the Strike Coordinator, and drastically increa...

The ground motion and damage caused by the 2015 Gorkha, Nepal earthquake can be characterized by their widespread distributions to the east. Evidence from strong ground motions, regional acceleration duration, and teleseismic waveforms indicate that rupture directivity contributed significantly to these distributions. This phenomenon has been thought to occur only if a strike-slip or dip-slip r...
