Marsupialisation or decompression is frequently performed as a conservative therapy for keratocystic odontogenic tumours (KCOTs). Positive podoplanin (PDPN) expression in the epithelium of KCOT has been previously reported and may be associated with neoplastic invasion. In the present study, changes in PDPN expression were observed in the epithelium of KCOTs following decompression. In total, 1...

Sarcomas of soft tissue and bone are rare neoplasms that can be separated into a large number of different diagnostic entities. Over the years, a number of diagnostic markers have been developed that aid pathologists in reaching the appropriate diagnoses. Many of these markers are sarcoma-specific proteins that can be detected by immunohistochemistry in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) ...

Since current microbiology methods are not suitable to detect Clostridium perfringens in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples, we developed a PCR assay to detect toxin-encoding genes and the 16S rRNA gene of C. perfringens. We successfully detected and genotyped C. perfringens in tissue sections from two autopsy cases.

BACKGROUND Mutations in the Kirsten Ras 1 (KRAS) and V-Raf Murine Sarcoma Viral Oncogene Homolog B1 (BRAF) genes may be predictive of response to drugs directly linked to the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) signaling pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 230 samples from patients with metastatic colorectal cancer were analyzed for KRAS exon 1 and 2 and for BRAF exon 15 mutations. ...

The diagnosis of Mycobacterium ulcerans infection is hampered by the slow growth of the bacterium in culture, resulting in a delay of several months before a specific diagnosis can be obtained. In addition, M. ulcerans cannot be isolated from water even when there is convincing epidemiological evidence implicating this as the source of infection. The aim of the present study was to develop a PC...

The archives of departments of pathology represent a unique source of morphologically defined biopsies derived from normal and pathologically altered tissues for which extensive clinical data are available. The exact quantification of nucleic acids in these biopsies offers a promising extension of current methodology to study the pathogenesis of many different diseases. The development of real-...

The Whole Genome Sampling Analysis (WGSA) assay in combination with Affymetrix GeneChip Mapping Arrays is used for copy number analysis of high-quality DNA samples (i.e., samples that have been collected from blood, fresh or frozen tissue, or cell lines). Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples, however, represent the most prevalent form of archived clinical samples, but they provide a...

Colorectal cancer patients with the BRAF(p.V600E) mutation have poor prognosis in metastatic setting. Personalized treatment options and companion diagnostics are needed to better treat these patients. Previously, we developed a 58-gene signature to characterize the distinct gene expression pattern of BRAF-mutation-like subtype (accuracy 91.1%). Further experiments repurposed drug Vinorelbine a...

Proteomic analysis of tissues has advanced in recent years as instruments and methodologies have evolved. The ability to retrieve peptides from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues followed by shotgun or targeted proteomic analysis is offering new opportunities in biomedical research. In particular, access to large collections of clinically annotated samples should enable the detailed analy...

BACKGROUND Few studies have focussed on the transepidermal elimination of parasites in Jorge Lobo's disease (lobomycosis). OBJECTIVE To identify the morphological features of the transepidermal elimination of parasites in lobomycosis. METHODS Sections were obtained from paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens of patients with lobomycosis and stained with hematoxylin-eosin for microscopic examina...
