Non-scaling Fixed Field Alternating Gradient accelerators (ns-FFAGs) show great potential for the acceleration of protons and light ions for the treatment of certain cancers. They have unique features as they combine techniques from the existing types of accelerators, cyclotrons and synchrotrons, and hence look to have advantages over both for this application. However, these unique features me...

The large hadron collider is CERN’s next particle accelerator project, scheduled for commissioning in 2005. The project requires accurate current measurements above 10 kA. Calibration heads have been developed in collaboration with industry to work up to 24 kA with a relative measurement uncertainty of 10 . This paper describes the design and verification of these heads.

A series of implicit, electrostatic, twoand threedimensional, particle-in-cell simulations are used to model heavy ion beam neutralization and focusing in the Scaled Final Focus Experiment at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The simulations confirm the charge neutralizing effect of electrons introduced into the beam path as the beam is focused and exiting the accelerator.

A beam test of GLAST (Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope) components was performed at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in October, 1997. These beam test components were simple versions of the planned flight hardware. Results on the performance of the tracker, calorimeter, and anti-coincidence charged particle veto are presented.

Our objective is to demonstrate, via a proof-of-principle experiment, particle acceleration by crossed laser beams in a single dielectric accelerator cell in vacuum. We expect to observe a laser-induced energy modulation of 15 keV on an electron beam with an initial energy of 32 MeV.

Abstract Demonstrating the viability of Advanced Accelerator Concepts (AAC) relies on experimental validation. Over last three decades, U.S. has maintained a portfolio advanced and novel accelerator test facilities to support research critical AAC. The have enabled pioneering developments in wide variety beam physics, including plasma-wakefield structure-wakefield acceleration. This paper provi...

Mixed-signal integrated circuits used in space applications are exposed to solar particles and galactic cosmic rays (GCR). For earth orbit environments, the energy and composition of the particle radiation depends primarily upon the orbital inclination and the orbit altitude. However, due to the solar cycle and its interaction with the GCR, there is also a time dependence to the intensity and e...

Nature may have handed scientists a new clue in a longstanding mystery: how matter beat out antimatter for dominance of the universe. Early data from twin experiments at the Tevatron, the world's reigning particle accelerator at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, Ill., suggest an unexpected chink in the hugely successful standard model of particle physics. The twist co...
