Bacillus anthracis was identified in a 61-year-old man hospitalized in Minnesota, USA. Cooperation between the hospital and the state health agency enhanced prompt identification of the pathogen. Treatment comprising antimicrobial drugs, anthrax immune globulin, and pleural drainage led to full recovery; however, the role of passive immunization in anthrax treatment requires further evaluation.
Three separate studies, two involving active-immunization regimens and one involving a passive-transfer protocol, were conducted to initially screen and ultimately more fully assess several nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae outer membrane proteins or their derivatives for their relative protective efficacy in chinchilla models of otitis media. Initial screening of these antigens (P5-fimbrin, l...
BACKGROUND A Phase I clinical trial has been proposed that uses neutralising monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) as passive immunoprophylaxis to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV-1 in South Africa. To assess the suitability of such an approach, we determined the sensitivity of paediatric HIV-1 subtype C viruses to the broadly neutralising MAbs IgG1b12, 2G12, 2F5, and 4E10. METHODS AND FIND...
Primary infection with the human cytomegalovirus (CMV) occurs in 1–4% of pregnancies. The rates of maternal-fetal CMV transmissions are around 25, 36, 41, and 66%, for infections occurring in the peri-conceptional weeks, first, second, and third trimester of pregnancy, respectively. On the other hand, the severity of fetal organ damage and dysfunction diminishes with increasing gestational age....
Antibody titers to varicella-zoster virus were measured in varicella-susceptible immunocompromised children 48 h after they received either one of two lots of zoster immune globulin (ZIG) or a selected lot of immune serum globulin (ISG). Globulin was given to modify varicella in these children after exposure to varicella or zoster. Indirect immunofluorescence antibody titers (FAMA) of children ...

To develop prophylaxis against mother-to-child human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission, we established a simian-human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV) infection model in neonatal macaques that mimics intrapartum mucosal virus exposure (T. W. Baba et al., AIDS Res. Hum. Retroviruses 10:351-357, 1994). Using this model, neonates were protected from mucosal SHIV-vpu(+) challenge by pre- and p...
