Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) is a cytokine produced by activated macrophages and other cells. In order to verify whether the serum levels of TNF-α in American tegumentary leishmaniasis patients are associated with the process of cure or aggravation of the disease, 41 patients were studied: 26 cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and 15 of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL). During active...

The incidence of second malignant neoplasms (SMNs) was investigated among 1,988 patients with complete data, enrolled in the SIOP Wilms tumor trials and studies 1, 2, 5, and 6, treated between September 1971 and October 1987. By the end of 1992, eight SMNs were documented, whereas only 1.3 were expected (standardized incidence ratio [SIR] = 4.15; 95% CI = 1.79, 8.17). The risk increases in the ...

Askin's tumor is a rare tumor arising from the chest wall. It is a subset of Ewing sarcoma characterized histologically by the presence of small round blue cells. It is a highly malignant tumor with guarded prognosis, which is dependent upon the extension of tumor at the time of diagnosis. A dual paper of Askin's tumors in young boys is being presented here.

BACKGROUND The results from recent brain-machine interface (BMI) studies suggest that it may be more efficient to use simple arbitrary relationships between individual neuron activity and BMI movements than the complex relationship observed between neuron activity and natural movements. This idea is based on the assumption that individual neurons can be conditioned independently regardless of t...

Serum tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) was evaluated in Vibrio vulnificus-infected patients at admission. The median TNF-α concentration in the non-survivor group was determined to be 261.0 pg/mL, in contrast to 69.5 pg/mL in the survivor group (P = 0.001). Hence, serum TNF-α concentration may potentially be an early predictor of the mortality in patients with Vibrio septicemia.

While research on brain-computer interfacing (BCI) has seen tremendous progress in recent years, performance still varies substantially between as well as within subjects, with roughly 10 20% of subjects being incapable of successfully operating a BCI system. In this short report, I argue that this variation in performance constitutes one of the major obstacles that impedes a successful commerc...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Surgically or conservatively treated brain abscesses may resolve, or pus may re-accumulate, requiring further intervention or treatment change. We hypothesized that diffusion-weighted (DW) imaging is useful in depicting features of abscesses related to therapeutic success or failure. METHODS Conventional contrast-enhanced T1- and T2-weighted imaging and DW imaging were ...

Background/introduction Cavitation-mediated therapies for the brain, such as ultrasound-induced Blood-Brain barrier opening and sonothrombolysis for the treatment of stroke, are being increasingly investigated. Robust methods for monitoring and controlling cavitation are necessary for safe translation of these techniques into clinical practice. This talk will review our work detecting and mappi...
