Due to the difficulty in accurately identifying cymothoids, these parasitic isopods are often incorrectly named or confused with other species. Within the genus Ceratothoa, a number of recent studies have aimed at clarifying some of the problematic species; however, several of the less studied species still require revision. This paper redescribes, from type material, several poorly known Cerat...

Background Millions of patients with allergy to tree pollen are sensitized to the major allergen of birch (Betula verrucosa) pollen, Bet v 1. Bet v 1-specific IgE cross-reacts with Bet v 1-homologous proteins from plant foods. Only little information on functional IgE epitopes of Bet v 1 and Bet v 1-like allergens in foods is available. We sought to generate a synthetic protein tool to identify...

Here, we report the draft genome sequence of Sphingorhabdus sp. strain EL138, an alphaproteobacterium that shows potential to degrade polycyclic aromatic compounds and to cope with various heavy metals and antibiotics. Moreover, the strain, isolated from the gorgonian coral Eunicella labiata, possesses several genes involved in the biosynthesis of polyphosphates, polyketides, and terpenoids.

In the EU, pigs must have permanent access to manipulable materials such as straw, rope, wood, etc. Long straw can fulfil this function, but can increase labour requirements for cleaning pens, and result in problems with blocked slatted floors and slurry systems. Chopped straw might be more practical, but what is the effect on pigs' behaviour of using chopped straw instead of long straw? Commer...

The various models of the Olympus gastrocamera use film of either 4 or 5 mm size, with 32 exposures per roll of film. The developed film is returned from the processing laboratory, therefore, as a film strip, 4 or 5 mm in width, and approximately 34 cm in length. The Olympus Camera Company supply a viewer with a magnifying power of x 10 with each instrument, and this is of some value in examini...

The laser damage precursors in subsurface of fused silica (e.g. photosensitive impurities, scratches and redeposited silica compounds) were mitigated by mineral acid leaching and HF etching with multi-frequency ultrasonic agitation, respectively. The comparison of scratches morphology after static etching and high-frequency ultrasonic agitation etching was devoted in our case. And comparison of...

On the basis of experimental and practical material it was determined that scratches were formed as a result of sliding of rough surface or sharp point along the body. In case of slight pressing narrow almost linear injuries occur in the form of chains which consist presumably of angle-shaped tears of epidermis with the bases directed to movement side. Considerable pressing results in continuou...
