Philanthropic foundations are often described as ‘intermediaries’ yet the term is neither defined nor de-constructed. This short paper identifies and briefly discusses 14 dimensions of intermediary roles played by foundations, groups them into four major themes: bringing parties together, capacity development relationship building, temporal bridging, sector-level or institutional intermediation.
