We describe a route to the development of novel PtNiN core-shell catalysts with low Pt content shell and inexpensive NiN core having high activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The PtNiN synthesis involves nitriding Ni nanoparticles and simultaneously encapsulating it by 2-4 monolayer-thick Pt shell. The experimental data and the density functional theory calculations i...

there has been a considerable interest in platinum group metal complexes of thiaoxa-donor macrocycles because of their unusual properties. 1 As an extension of our studies involving mixed-donor cyclic 2a and acyclic 2b ligands incorporating thiaoxa mixed-donors, we became interested in exploring their coordination chemistry of platinum group metal ions. The S2O-donor macrocycle of the title com...

The majority of epithelial ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer and primary peritoneal adenocarcinoma (PPA) patients experience disease recurrence even though they receive standard treatment. The treatment outcome after recurrence depended on the interval time between the time to complete platinum-based chemotherapy until the time to replapse that we called a platinum-free interval. In patient...

The spatial arrangement of atoms is directly linked to chemical function. A fundamental challenge in surface chemistry and catalysis relates to the determination of three-dimensional structures with atomic-level precision. Here we determine the three-dimensional structure of an organometallic complex on an amorphous silica surface using solid-state NMR measurements, enabled through a dynamic nu...

Imbalances between metal supply and demand, real or anticipated, have inspired the concept of metal criticality. We here characterize the criticality of 62 metals and metalloids in a 3D "criticality space" consisting of supply risk, environmental implications, and vulnerability to supply restriction. Contributing factors that lead to extreme values include high geopolitical concentration of pri...

Group VIII B metal oxides supported on gamma-alumina were investigated as catalysts and promoters of MoO3 hydrodesulfurization catalysis. Superior promotion was observed in PbO promoted catalyst compared to that of CoO, the typically accepted promoter. Other metal oxides, SnO and Ho2O3 exhibited reasonable hydrodesulfurization catalysis promotion but lower than for CoO promoted catalyst.

The equiatomic germanides REPtGe with the heavy rare earth elements (RE) have been reinvestigated with respect to platinum-germanium ordering. The compounds were prepared by arc-melting of the elements followed by annealing for two weeks at 1070 K. The REPtGe germanides crystallize with the TiNiSi-type structure, space group Pnma. The structures of ErPtGe (a = 692.01(5), b = 432.03(4), c = 753....

Over the past few decades, the realm of inorganic medicinal chemistry has been dominated by the study of the anti-cancer properties of transition metal complexes, particularly those based on platinum or ruthenium. However, comparatively less attention has been focused on the development of metal complexes for the treatment of inflammatory or autoimmune diseases. Metal complexes possess a number...

The widespread use of low-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells for mobile applications will require significant reductions in the amount of expensive Pt contained within their cathodes, which drive the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Although progress has been made in this respect, further reductions through the development of more active and stable electrocatalysts are still ne...

The uptake and bioaccumulation of 15 road dust metals by the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) were investigated in laboratory exposure studies with emphasis on the traffic-related platinum-group elements (PGEs) palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), and rhodium (Rh). The biological availability of the metals may depend on water characteristics, so the mussels were maintained in two types of water: n...
