Laboratory studies suggest that substantial amounts of polychlorinated biphenyls are rapidly volatilized from wet contaminated solids during water evaporation. If significant losses also occur during field activities, potential analytical, global, and health implications should be considered in the design and monitoring of remedial actions and the handling of contaminated solids.

Pseudomonas abietaniphila KF701 utilizes biphenyl as a sole source of carbon and degrades polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Here, we report the 6,886,250-bp draft genome sequence of KF701, which contains 6,315 coding sequences and 59.4 mol% G+C content. The strain possesses genes for biphenyl catabolism and other genes that mediate the degradation of benzoate, salicylate, and phenol.

Five polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-degrading bacteria were tested for the ability to differentiate between the enantiomers of four atropisomeric PCB congeners (2,2',3,6-tetra-CB; 2,2',3,3',6-penta-CB; 2,2',3,4',6-penta-CB; and 2,2',3,5',6-penta-CB) after growth in the presence of tryptone-soytone, biphenyl, carvone, or cymene. Enantioselectivity was shown to vary with respect to strain, congen...

The crystal structure of PCB 77 (3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl, C(12)H(6)Cl(4)), a dioxin-like PCB congener, is described. The dihedral angle of PCB 77 is 43.94(6) degrees, which is slightly larger than calculated or experimental dihedral angles of biphenyl derivatives in solution but smaller than experimental dihedral angles in the gas phase.

Quantitative biomonitoring methods were applied to determine PCB concentrations in water from the Detroit River over a 17 year period. During 2014, mussels were deployed for and extended duration (21-364 days) and time dependent PCB concentrations were fit to a bioaccumulation model to estimate elimination coefficients (ktot) and provide site specific calibration of mussel toxicokinetics. The s...

We report evidence of a novel mechanism by which polychlorinated biphenyls might act as potent inducers of inflammation. Aroclor 1242 (A1242), a polychlorinated biphenyl mixture, and 2,2',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB47), a constituent of A1242 that produces the same patterns of effects, impaired the oxidative burst of human neutrophils by inhibiting the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase,...
