Conducting polymers, because of their special properties, are used to introduce conductive polymeric composites. Also, clays have recently been used for preparation of polymer composites with enhanced mechanical and thermal properties. The aim of this work is to study the synergetic effect of the co-presence of conducting polyaniline and montmorillonite in the polyethylene matrix. Polyethylene ...

In this investigation, studies are carried out on the mechanical properties of hybrid polymer composites. Hybrid composites can reach a better combination of both artificial and natural fibre properties. Different weight percentages of jute fibres were hybridised with coconut sheath to produce the composites through compression moulding. Composites were produced using untreated and treated fibr...

Electrically conducting super-macroporous polymer/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composites have been fabricated with the aid of cryogenic treatment. CNTs are selectively deposited onto the inner surface of interconnected polymer walls surrounding large air-filled pores. The present concept provides highly conducting nanocomposites at a very low nanotubes content.

Recent progress in the development of holographic gratings for neutron-optics applications is reviewed. We summarize the properties of gratings recorded in deuterated (poly)methylmethacrylate, holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystals and nanoparticle-polymer composites revealed by diffraction experiments with slow neutrons. Existing and anticipated neutron-optical instrumentations based on...

Magnetic hybrid liquid crystalline composites have been obtained either by thermal decomposition of a cobalt precursor in a solution containing a liquid crystal polymer or by dispersing preformed cobalt nanorods in a liquid crystal polymer matrix. The final materials are all mesomorphous and ferromagnetic. Their magnetic characteristics are compared as a function of the synthesis method.

The need for reconstructive surgery of bones is continuously increasing along with the ageing of the population as well as the increase of traumatologic injuries. In the United States, the number of bone grafts was 350,000 in 2001. Nowadays, over 500,000 bone graft procedures are performed annually, and approximately 2.2 million worldwide (Giannoudis et al., 2005). The estimated cost of these p...

Natural fibers are emerging as low cost, lightweight and apparently environmentally superior alternatives to glass fibers in composites. We review select comparative life cycle assessment studies of natural fiber and glass fiber composites, and identify key drivers of their relative environmental performance. Natural fiber composites are likely to be environmentally superior to glass fiber comp...

Due to their susceptibility to bacterial biofilm formation, commercial tubes for medical use are one of the main sources of hospital infections with Acinetobacter baumannii. The anti-biofouling activity of novel composites against the clinical isolate of the multi-drug resistant A. baumannii is reported here. The composites were prepared by addition of micronised silver-exchanged natural zeolit...

A maximal product of stiffness and viscoelastic damping (E tan d), a figure of merit for damping layers, is desirable for structural damping applications. Particulate-reinforced metal–matrix composites were prepared by ultrasonic agitation of the melt and composed of the zinc–aluminum (ZnAl) alloy Zn80Al20 (in wt%) as the lossy matrix and SiC or BaTiO3 as the particulate reinforcements. ZnAl–Si...
