Case A 4-year-old girl injured her left leg while tobogganing. She complained of immediate pain in her left knee and refused to bear weight through her left lower extremity. Her family brought her to the local emergency department where radiographs of the left knee were obtained; radiographic findings of the knee were normal (Figure 1). It was believed that the patient had a soft tissue injury ...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although drowning is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in young children, the neuropathologic consequences have not been fully determined. The purpose of this article was to quantitatively characterize white matter microstructural abnormalities in pediatric anoxic brain injury from nonfatal drowning and investigate the correlation with motor function. MATERIALS...
Traumatic posterior instability may occasionally cause a large osteochondral lesion when the anterior humeral head is compressed against the posterior glenoid rim. This is termed a reverse Hill–Sachs lesion. Such osteochondral defects may be very large in the case of chronic locked dislocations. Even in acute posterior disclocations, closed reduction may be difficult when the humeral head is lo...
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the topography of the saphenous nerve branches and of the popliteal neurovascular bundle of knee and to establish a low risk placement position of the posteromedial knee portal (PmKP). A slice anatomy study, by using plastinated transparent knee cross-sections was performed on 12 intact right male cadaver lower limbs. The measurements were performed at ...
PURPOSE To evaluate posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in humans after cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, by using optical coherence tomography (OCT-1). METHODS Sixty-six eyes with PCO and 20 eyes with a normal posterior capsule were analyzed. A 3-mm-long horizontal scan of the posterior capsule was obtained. Measurements at three points and their average were recor...
A MODIFICATION of the original Ridley acrylic implant suggested in a previous communication (Epstein, 1957) comprised a biconvex lens of larger diameter (9.4 mm.) and thinner central thickness (1 5 mm.), and with a naturally tapering edge instead of a relatively thick square edge. It was found that such a lens facilitates centration, and adjusts itself almost automatically after insertion, litt...
PURPOSE The ocular humors are relatively low in protein, yet cell growth in the human capsular bag still occurs after extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) surgery. This resilient growth gives rise to posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in a significant proportion (30%) of patients. This study compared the ability of human lens cells to proliferate in serum-supplemented and protein-free me...
A lacunar infarction occurred in the posterior limb of the internal capsule in a 33-years-old Colombian woman, showed an antero-posterior (A-P) course of the corticospinal pathway. Anatomical and histological studies had suggested this course, but to the author's knowledge, this could be the first reported case of a living patient with such features, confirming those previous reports about them.
In this technique, I/A of cortex as a separate step can be omitted, thereby eliminating that portion of the surgical procedure in which posterior capsular disruption most frequently occurs. Residual cortical cleanup is accomplished in the presence of a posterior chamber IOL which protects the poserior capsule by holding it remote from the aspiration port.
