The use and overuse of antibiotics in humans is a major contributor to the selection of antibiotic resistance organisms. Recent evidence has shown that primary care prescribing selects for resistances of clinical importance. The National Prescribing Service runs both educational and audit activities. The latter provide some insight into general practice attitudes toward antibiotic prescribing.
OBJECTIVES (A) To measure the extent to which different candidate outcome measures identified high-risk prescribing that is potentially changeable by the data-driven quality improvement in primary care (DQIP) intervention.(B) To explore the value of reviewing identified high-risk prescribing to clinicians.(C) To optimise the components of the DQIP intervention. DESIGN Mixed method study. SE...
The global population of multimorbid older people is growing steadily. Multimorbidity is the principal cause of complex polypharmacy, which in turn is the prime risk factor for inappropriate prescribing and adverse drug reactions and events. Those who prescribe for older frailer multimorbid people are particularly prone to committing prescribing errors of various kinds. The causes of prescribin...
INTRODUCTION It has been suggested that doctors in their first year of post-graduate training make a disproportionate number of prescribing errors. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare the prevalence of prescribing errors made by first-year post-graduate doctors with that of errors by senior doctors and non-medical prescribers and to investigate the predictors of potentially serious prescrib...
OBJECTIVES The volume of prescribed antibiotics is associated with antimicrobial resistance and, unlike most other antibiotic classes, flucloxacillin prescribing has increased. We aimed to describe UK primary care flucloxacillin prescribing and factors associated with subsequent antibiotic prescribing as a proxy for non-response. PATIENTS AND METHODS Clinical Practice Research Datalink patien...
BACKGROUND Despite evidence-based guidelines, aspirin prescribing for the secondary prevention of stroke is sub-optimal. Little is known about why general practitioners do not prescribe aspirin to indicated patients. We sought to identify and describe factors that lead general practitioners (GPs) not to prescribe aspirin to eligible stroke patients. This was the first stage of a study exploring...
