The dust content and composition of lesions and hilar lymph nodes from the lungs of British coalworkers have been examined. Samples of macules, fibrotic nodules, and massive fibrosis (both peripheral and central sites) were dissected from 49 lungs. The highest mean dust concentrations (about 20%) were found in nodules and massive fibrosis. Overall there were no significant differences between t...

Quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM) was used to investigate the interactions between cellulase enzymes and model cellulose substrates. The substrates consisted of thin films of cellulose that were spin-coated onto polyvinylamine (PVAm) precoated quartz crystal sensors carrying conductive gold surfaces. In QCM the quartz crystals are piezoelectrically driven and the frequency and dissipation sh...

We demonstrate the quartz crystal microbalance as a novel method to quantify the reaction yields and stability of the terminal conjugation of chemically complex molecules. Oxime ligation is identified as a facile, broadly applicable method for the reducing-end conjugation of glycosaminoglycans that overcomes the limited stability and yield of popular hydrazone ligation.

Over the last 2 decades, the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM or QCM-D) has emerged as a versatile tool for investigating soft and solvated interfaces between solid surfaces and bulk liquids because it can provide a wealth of information about key structural and functional parameters of these interfaces. In this Feature, we offer QCM users a set of guidelines for interpretation and quantitative...

We report a quartz crystal microbalance study of the nanodynamical properties of tricresylphosphate (TCP) reaction films formed on high purity Fe, Cr, Fe oxide, and Cr oxide surfaces at elevated temperatures. The data reveal trace levels of interfacial slippage, potentially in conjunction with viscoelastic effects, for reaction films characterized by very low macroscopic friction coefficients. ...

Several prototypes of a Čerenkov Correlated Timing (CCT) Detector have been tested at the KEK-PS test beam line. We describe the results for Čerenkov light yields and timing characteristics from quartz and acrylic bar prototypes. A Čerenkov angle resolution is found to be 15 mrad at a propagation distance of 100 cm with a 2 cm thick quartz bar prototype.

A detailed analysis of the quality factor, the resonance frequency and the electrical resistance of custom quartz tuning forks (QTFs) having different geometrical parameters is reported. We implemented custom QTFs in a quartz enhanced photoacoustic sensor targeting water vapor detection and compared the fundamental and first overtone flexural modes gas sensor performances.

A method of bio-assay of the fibrogenicity of respirable dust is described. Quartz, coal, and quartz-coal dust mixtures were administered to mice via the tail vein, and liver collagen was estimated chemically. Groups of mice that had received doses of 10, 15, and 20 mg. of these dusts were killed at intervals of 10, 20, and 30 weeks after injection. There was, in general, a linear relation betw...

Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to study microscopic ionic structures and orientational preferences of absorbed [BMIM] cations and four paired anions ([BF4], [PF6], [TFO] and [TF2N]) on quartz surfaces. Two chemically different quartz surface models were adopted: one is saturated with silanol Si(OH)2 groups, and the other one is covered by silane SiH2 groups, respec...
