Recent debate has highlighted the importance of estimating both the strength of sexual selection on phenotypic traits, and the opportunity for sexual selection. We describe seasonal fluctuations in mating dynamics of Leptinotarsa undecimlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). We compared several estimates of the opportunity for, and the strength of, sexual selection and male precopulatory competit...

Most Alternaria spp. are considered asexual but recent molecular evolution analyses of Alternaria mating-type genes show that the mating locus is under strong purifying selection, indicating a possible role in sexual reproduction. The objective of this study was to determine the mode of reproduction of an Alternaria alternata sensu lato population causing citrus brown spot in central Florida. M...

It is a challenge to measure sexual selection because both stochastic events (chance) and deterministic factors (selection) generate variation in individuals' reproductive success. Most researchers realize that random events ('noise') make it difficult to detect a relationship between a trait and mating success (i.e. the presence of sexual selection). There is, however, less appreciation of the...

This paper investigates immigrant assortative mating and relationship satisfaction. Using a modifi ed random eff ects ordered probit model, the paper demonstrates that spouses of mixed couples are signifi cantly less satisfi ed with their partner than nativeonly and foreign-only couples. Abstract. We present results of the numerical investigation of the homogenous Dirichlet and Neumann problems to an age-sex-structured population dynamics deterministic model taking into account random mating, female’s pregnancy, and spatial diffusion. We prove the existence of separable solutions to the non-dispersing population model and, by using the numerical experiment, corroborate their lo...

In this report, a rare case of pregnancy in a mouse without mating and during breastfeeding is presented. Out-bred NMRI mice were prepared for mating. Two female mice without superovulation were caged with one male. The next morning, vaginal plaque was not detected; therefore, females were kept in the cage with the same male for 4 more days. One of the females delivered 4 offspring: one female ...

Spatial genetic variation was assessed in the common house fly Musca domestica. Allozymes at three gene enzyme system unraveled ten loci which revealed seventeen alleles in house fly populations. F statistics revealed that except ACPH-1 and EST-3 all the other loci show inbreeding (Fis>Fst). Persistent heterozygosity was observed in ACPH-1(Fis= -0.140) which indicate random mating for this locus.
