neither the ash‘arites nor kierkegaard’s systems of theology are anti-rational, for kierkegaard regards the contradiction present in the object of faith as absolute rather than logical, suggesting thereby the existential dialectics for understanding this contradiction instead of resolving it. the ash‘arites also hold that one can understand the existence of god through absolute reason, or reaso...

bubbles in asset prices have fascinated researchers in finance. identify asset bubbles, by circumstances, on the stock market has been a growing number of research theoretical and empirical. on a theoretical level, it was assumed that the price dynamics reflect irrational behavior of economic agents and, therefore, should be excluded from a deal with the truly rational economic agents burmeiste...

We investigate the problem of revenue optimal mechanism design [Myerson, 1981] under the context of the partial rationality model, where buyers randomize between two modes: rational and irrational. When a buyer is irrational (can be thought of as lazy), he acts according to certain fixed strategies, such as bidding his true valuation. The seller cannot observe the buyer’s valuation, or his rati...

In this paper we study the role of cleavability and divisibility in the topology of generalized ordered (GO-)spaces. We characterize cleavability of a GOspace over the class of metrizable spaces, and over the spaces of irrational and rational numbers. We present a series of examples related to characterizations of cleavability over separable metric spaces and over the space of real numbers.

The evolution, through linear dispersion, of piecewise constant periodic initial data leads to surprising quantized structures at rational times, and fractal, nondifferentiable profiles at irrational times. Similar phenomena have been observed in optics and quantum mechanics, and lead to intriguing connections with exponential sums arising in number theory. Ramifications of these observations f...

An evidence based or “rational” approach to prescribing is thought to maximise the benefit and minimise the harm from prescription drugs. Unfortunately, prescribing often does not meet this ideal despite clinicians’ best intentions. We use treatment of chronic tophaceous gout to show how apparently irrational prescribing arises from several interacting “failures” in both clinical practice and d...

We introduce variants of Barvinok’s algorithm for counting lattice points in polyhedra. The new algorithms are based on irrational signed decomposition in the primal space and the construction of rational generating functions for cones with low index. We give computational results that show that the new algorithms are faster than the existing algorithms by a large factor.

We prove existence of quasi-periodic solutions with two frequencies of completely resonant, periodically forced nonlinear wave equations with periodic spatial boundary conditions. We consider both the cases the forcing frequency is: (Case A) a rational number and (Case B) an irrational number.
