BACKGROUND IL-18 is a multifunctional cytokine capable of inducing either Th1 or Th2 polarization depending on the immunologic milieu. IL-18 is detected at the materno-fetal interface very soon in early pregnancy. Two polymorphisms in the promoter region of the IL-18 gene at positions of -607 and -137 appear to have functional impacts. OBJECTIVE This study attempts to evaluate the frequency o...

PROBLEM Published randomized trials of the use of intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) as a treatment for recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) have produced conflicting results. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the current evidence to evaluate the effectiveness of IVIG for RSA. METHOD OF STUDY After a thorough search of the literature, four randomized, double-blin...

BACKGROUND In view of evidence suggesting an immunological cause of recurrent spontaneous abortions (RSA) and the large number of maternal natural killer (NK) cells present in the pregnant uterus, we investigated the genetic polymorphism of the killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) in women with RSA. METHODS KIR gene repertoire and KIR2DL4 (a receptor for HLA-G) genotyping were dete...

Recurrent spontaneous abortion, defined as three consecutive abortions, occurs in approximately 1% to 2% of couples. Although the cause is unknown in up to 50% of cases, about 5% of these couples are found to be a balanced translocation carrier. We report a case in which the mother was identified to be a translocation carrier following the birth of a baby with multiple congenital abnormalities.

Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) occurs in 1‑5% of parturients. The sustained therapy and research for RSA is expensive, which is a serious issue faced by both patients and doctors. The aim of the present study was to detect protein expression profiles in the serum of RSA patients and healthy controls, and to identify potential biomarkers for this disease. A 1,000‑protein microarray consist...

Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA), defined as three or more sequential abortions before the twentieth week of gestation. Some studies have led to the awareness that immunological factors play an important role in establishing a successful pregnancy. The aim of present study was to investigate the relationship between RSA and polymorphisms of cytokine genes coding for TNF-α (-308 G→A, -238 G→...

Recurrent pregnancy loss, defined as a pregnancy failure occurring before 24 weeks of gestation more than two or three times according to most definitions, is a fertility defect encountered in 1-5% of the patients. This defect is of course of multifactorial origin. Among the possible origins of recurrent pregnancy loss are uterine structural defaults, defective ploidy control of the embryo, def...

The spontaneous abortion rate in the general population is about 10%. In some women treated with drug regimens for ovulation induction with or without modern assisted reproductive technology (IVF/ICSI etc.) the rate of pregnancy failure is high. Special attention should be directed towards women with recurrent abortion after spontaneous or stimulated cycles without or combined with methods of A...

Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) is a complex and heterogeneous disorder with multiple etiologies. Genetic factors are thought to play an important role in the etiology of RSA. With recent advances genetic testing technologies, there has been increasing interest using these tools diagnose This review discusses different types methods, such as karyotyping, chromosomal microarray analysis, ne...
