Combined-action assessment requires first the calculation of combination effects expected for the case of no interaction. In a second step the experimental combination effects have to be compared to the expected ones in order to classify the combination as synergistic or antagonistic. Adopting the response surface methodology, a new procedure for the calculation of zero interaction response sur...

The spectrum of acute pancreatitis ranges from mild edematous disease to a severe necrotizing process which is usually accompanied by local or systemic complications and even mortality. Early deaths (within the first week) due to severe acute pancreatitis are generally caused by massive inflammatory responses which result in multiple organ failure. Although the exact mechanisms which trigger th...

Editorials 558 Given the magnitude and severity of the threat of antimicrobial resistance, it is a sign of progress that Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) are now developing national action plans in response to WHO's Global action plan on antimicrobial resistance. 1 To accelerate these efforts, in April 2016 the Wellcome Trust held an interdisci-plinary international summit, ...

04 February 2009 1 Informed consent is a crucial element of the foundation upon which ethical medical practice rests. Providing patients, parents, or guardians with an honest assessment of the risks and benefits of any medical procedure requires the physician to be, to the best of his or her ability, “informed.” This document is produced by Thoughtful House Center for Children in response to on...

While 540 nanometers is the most effective wavelength in provoking development, larvae are far more responsive to 540-nanometer light if it is provided immediately preceding rather than followng a white-light photophase which otherwise serves to maintain diapause. This difference in sensitivity is probably due to bleaching and implies that the larvae experience an asymmetric day.

Organisms are continuously exposed to DNA damaging agents, consequently, cells have developed an intricate system known as the DNA damage response (DDR) in order to detect and repair DNA lesions. This response has to be rapid and accurate in order to keep genome integrity. It has been observed that the condensation state of chromatin hinders a proper DDR. However, the condensation state of chro...

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether information about the acceleration characteristics of a moving target can be used for both action and perception. Also of interest was whether prior movement experience altered perceptual judgements. Participants manually intercepted targets moving with various acceleration, velocity and movement time characteristics. They also made perceptua...

statement of problem: despite the wide range of new dental materials, there is still a need for biomaterials demonstrating high biocompatibility, antimicrobial effects and ideal mechanical properties. purpose: the aim of this study was to histologically evaluate the pulpal response to a conventional glass ionomer, a resin modified glass ionomer and a calcium hydroxide in human teeth. materials ...

We have characterized the kinetic response of gene targets throughout the murine genome to transcriptional modulation by the glucocorticoid receptor (GR). In contrast to a model in which multiple genes are either repressed or activated during the GR response, the vast majority of responsive genes are subject to complex regulation profiles, frequently with alternate activation and repression pha...

First, we investigate the static non-Abelian Kubo equation. We prove that it does not possess finite energy solutions; thereby we establish that gauge theories do not support hard thermal solitons. This general result is verified by a numerical solution of the equations. A similar argument shows that " static " instantons are absent. In addition, we note that the static equations reproduce the ...
