Nontraumatic rhabdomyolysis may be associated with severe metabolic disturbances. In particular, previous literature has described a 8-20% incidence of acute renal failure in rhabdomyolysis. The aim of this study was to evaluate our experience on 11 patients with acute renal failure treated by high-efficiency daily hemodialysis.
Severe rhabdomyolysis is a rare complication of exposure to the recreational drug khat. Adverse reactions to khat that have been reported in the literature include myocardial infarction and reversible vasoconstriction syndrome. The active ingredient, cathinone, is a naturally occurring beta-ketone amphetamine that may be responsible for this severe catecholaminergic response. Here we report a c...
Rhabdomyolysis is considered a relative contra-indication to free tissue transfer because of the formation of free radicals that cause endothelial damage to the microcirculation. We describe the case of a young man who required free tissue transfer coverage of a large open fracture of his right tibia and fibula. This was performed successfully in the presence of rhabdomyolysis.
Rhabdomyolysis is one of the causes of acute renal failure (ARF) and it can be life-threatening in some cases. Hypocalcemia is prominent during the oliguric phase of renal failure and if the patient reaches the diuretic phase, hypercalcemia can develop. We report a 20-year-old male patient with rhabdomyolysis-induced ARF with bi-phasic calcium metabolism observed during the
The placebo-corrected incidence of rhabdomyolysis in a systematic review of 20 statin trials was 1.6/100,000 per year. It is likely to be higher than this in everyday clinical practice when statins are knowingly or inadvertently co-prescribed with drugs that interfere with their metabolism. We report a case of rhabdomyolysis causing muscle weakness and prolonging an episode of dialysis-dependen...
BACKGROUND Urine myoglobin continues to be used as a marker of rhabdomyolysis, particularly to assess risk of developing acute renal failure and evaluate treatment success. We sought to determine the predictive validity of urine myoglobin (uMb) for acute renal failure (ARF) in patients with suspected rhabdomyolysis. METHODS We performed a broad systemic review of the literature from January 1...
Rhabdomyolysis is a syndrome characterized by acute necrosis of skeletal muscle and subsequent release its cellular contents into the circulation. It can occur due to trauma, exercise, infections some metabolic diseases, as well secondary use various drugs. A 34-year-old male patient with diagnosis schizophrenia for 2 months was brought our emergency department his relatives because intake 350 ...
