Mucormycoses are high-mortality infections feared by clinicians worldwide. They predominantly affect immunocompromised hosts and are associated with a spectrum of disease. We describe a case of cutaneous mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus oryzae in a patient with multiple risk factors cured with complete surgical excision and a short course of antifungal therapy.
Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor enhanced the efficacy of liposomal amphotericin B (LAMB) in a murine model of disseminated infection by Rhizopus oryzae, significantly prolonging survival and reducing tissue burden. The use of gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) alone was ineffective, and IFN-gamma combined with LAMB did not improve the results obtained with LAMB alone.
We studied the combination of amphotericin B lipid complex (ABLC) and caspofungin in mice with disseminated Rhizopus oryzae. Combination therapy improved survival compared to that of mice given monotherapy and that of untreated controls (P < 0.05) but did not improve organ clearance. In addition, prophylactic combination therapy was not more effective than prophylactic ABLC alone.
Wooden sticks used to suspend feces obtained for surveillance cultures were found to be the source of Rhizopus microsporus var. rhizopodiformis causing a pseudo-outbreak among 17 immunocompromised patients cared for in three different wards. Nonsterile wooden products should therefore not be used for collecting, handling, and processing specimens for microbiological examination.
During an investigation of an outbreak of gastroenteritis caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+), we identified unpasteurized tempeh as a novel food vehicle and Rhizopus spp. starter culture as the source of the contamination. Safe handling of uncooked, unpasteurized tempeh should be emphasized for prevention of foodborne illnesses.

Upgrading of farmed salmon oil obtained from by-products was carried out by lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis to increase omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content. The lipases tested were from Penicillium camembertii (PC), Rhizomucor javanicus (RJ), Rhizopus niveus (RN), Rhizopus delemar (RD), Burkholderia cepacia (BC), Rhizopus oryzae (RO), Candida rugosa (CR) and Rhizomucor miehei (RM). In this study, we investigated the pH dependency of the in vitro activities of amphotericin B (AMB) and flucytosine (5FC) against Candida spp., Cryptococcus neoformans, Aspergillus fumigatus, Rhizopus spp., and Scedosporium prolificans in RPMI 1640 buffered with citrate buffer (pH 4.0, 5.0, 5.4, and 6.0), citrate-phosphate buffer (pH 5.4, 6.0, 6.4, and 7.0), and 3-[N-morpholino]propanesulfonic ...
Plant-fungal associations have been explored by routine cultivation based approaches and cultivation based approaches cannot catalogue more than 5% of fungal diversity associated with any niche. In the present study, an attempt has been made to catalogue fungal diversity associated with belowground parts i.e. rhizosphere and cormosphere, of Crocus sativus (an economically important herb) during...
A 52-year-old heart-lung transplant patient presented to the emergency department with acute onset of neurologic symptoms. MRI showed ballooning of the left ventricle, midline shift and contrast enhancement in the anterior horn of the left ventricle. Ventricle neuroendoscopy revealed whitish, floccose aerial structures within the left ventricle. Brain biopsy cultures grew Rhizopus arrhizus. The...
