The fungi isolated from 100 samples of flue-cured tobacco from 12 markets in 2 tobacco belts comprised 11 genera, including 10 species of Aspergillus. The mean percentage per sample isolated from 62 samples of tobacco from Middle Belt markets was Alternaria, 40.6%; Aspergillus niger, 47.8%; Aspergillus repens, 38.0%; and Penicillium, 25.8%. The mean percentage per sample isolated from 38 sample...

An ascomycetes fungus was isolated from brine storage of green olives of the Arauco cultivar imported from Argentina and identified as Monascus ruber. The combined effects of different concentrations of sodium chloride (3.5-5.5%), sodium benzoate (0-0.1%), potassium sorbate (0-0.05%) and temperature (30-40°C) were investigated on the growth of M. ruber in the brine of stored table olives using ...

Rhodococcus sp. B7740 was isolated from Arctic seawater and selected for its capacity to synthesize carotenoids. Here, we report the complete genome sequence of Rhodococcus sp. B7740 to provide the genetic basis for a better understanding of its carotenoid-accumulating capabilities, and we describe the major features of the genome.

The results of 16S rRNA, gyrB and catA gene sequence comparisons and reasserted DNA-DNA hybridization unambiguously proved that Rhodococcus jialingiae Wang et al. 2010 and Rhodococcus qingshengii Xu et al. 2007 represent a single species. On the basis of priority R. jialingiae must be considered a later synonym of R. qingshengii.

By screening a bacterial population from the soil in Tokyo, Japan, we isolated a boron-tolerant bacterium, strain BTM4c. Strain BTM4c grew under the boron excess conditions with 100 mM boric acid, which is generally toxic to bacteria. Molecular phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic, and physiological data showed that the strain belongs to the genus Rhodococcus, and is to be identified as Rhodococcus bai...

Soil-borne Gram-positive bacteria from the genus Rhodococcus metabolize a range of aromatic hydrocarbons and also produce a variety of value-added products, such as triacylglycerols and steroids. We report the draft genome sequence of Rhodococcus opacus strain M213 (9,193,504 bp with a G+C content of 66.99%), providing a comprehensive understanding of the repertoire of metabolic genes of this s...

The genus Rhodococcus exhibits a broad catabolic diversity that is often related to unusual genome diversity. A modified HiCEP method was applied for the identification of strain-specific genes by comparing two different strains. Rhodococcus erythropolis JCM3201 and NI86/21 were compared and 11 genes were identified as NI86/21-specific genes.

A case of an HIV infected patient complicated with Penicillium marneffei and Rhodococcus equi infection is reported. He presented with chronic ulcer as pyoderma gangrenosum-like on his right calf and submandibular lymphadenitis as scrofuloderma-like. Penicillium marneffei and Rhodococcus equi were isolated from the ulcer and lymph node respectively.
