We study the Yang-Lee zeros of a random matrix partition function with the global symmetries of the QCD partition function. We consider both zeros in the complex chemical potential plane and in the complex mass plane. In both cases we find that the zeros are located on a curve. In the thermodynamic limit, the zeros appear to merge to form a cut. The shape of this limiting curve can be obtained ...
We address the question which additional information on the source shape and dynamics can be extracted from three-particle Bose-Einstein correlations. For chaotic sources the true three-particle correlation term is shown to be sensitive to the momentum dependence of the saddle point of the source and to its asymmetries around that point. For partially coherent sources the three-pion correlator ...
We discuss the generalization of intensity interferometry from the case of two-particle correlations to three-particle correlations. We address the question whether three-particle Bose-Einstein correlations contain additional information on the shape and dynamics of the source which cannot be extracted from two-particle correlations. For chaotic sources we find that the true three-particle corr...
Pyramidal cells in the electrosensory lateral line lobe (ELL) of weakly electric fish have been observedto produce high-frequency burst discharge with constant depolarizing current (Turner et al., 1994). We present a two-compartment model of an ELL pyramidal cell that produces burst discharges similar to those seen in experiments. The burst mechanism involves a slowly changing intera...
A Relaxed Dimensional Factorization preconditioner for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations
In this paper we introduce a Relaxed Dimensional Factorization (RDF) preconditioner for saddle point problems. Properties of the preconditioned matrix are analyzed and compared with those of the closely related Dimensional Splitting (DS) preconditioner recently introduced by Benzi and Guo [7]. Numerical results for a variety of finite element discretizations of both steady and unsteady incompre...

This paper presents a region-based stereo matching algorithm, in which the regions are computed from the Gaussian (K) and mean (H) curvature information of the image intensity surface. A region is defined as a connected area of constant K/H sign combination, and thus constitutes the footprint of a local section of the intensity surface, whose shape is a peak, a pit, a positive or a negative sad...
Daily-life foldable items, such as popup tents, the curved origami sculptures exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art of New York, overstrained bicycle wheels, released bilayered microrings and strained cyclic macromolecules, are made of rings buckled or folded in tridimensional saddle shapes. Surprisingly, despite their popularity and their technological and artistic importance, the design of su...
Chloroplasts regulate their growth to optimize photosynthesis. Quantitative data show that the ratio of total chloroplast area to mesophyll cell area is constant across different cells within a single species and also across species. Wild-type chloroplasts exhibit little scatter around this trend; highly irregularly shaped mutant chloroplasts exhibit more scatter. Here we propose a model motiva...
