This chapter proposes that search engines apply a verticalizing pressure on the WWW many-to-many information distribution model, forcing this to revert to a distributive model similar to that of the mass media. The argument for this starts with a critical descriptive examination of the history of search mechanisms for the Internet. Parallel to this there is a discussion of the increasing ties b...

We present a Bayesian variable selection procedure that is applicable to genomewide studies involving a combination of clinical, gene expression and genotype information. We use the Mode Oriented Stochastic Search (MOSS) algorithm of Dobra and Massam (2010) to explore regions of high posterior probability for regression models involving discrete covariates and to perform hierarchical log-linear...

results sixty patients were involved in this study. in asv mode, values including peak airway pressure (p-peak), end-tidal carbon dioxide (etco2), tidal volume and respiratory dead space were significantly lower than simv mode. although the mean value for dynamic compliance had no significant difference in the two types of ventilation, it was better in asv mode. methods in a crossover study, pa...

The multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problem (MM RCPSP) is an NP-hard problem representing a generalization of the well-studied RCPSP. Depth-first tree search approach by Sprecher & Drexl (1998) is the best-known exact solution tree search procedure for this problem. In this paper we modify an existing breadth-first algorithm for multiple processors. It is a computer-cluster i...

this paper presents a relatively new management model for the optimal design and operation of irrigation water pumping systems. the model makes use of the newly introduced particle swarm optimization algorithm. a two step optimization model is developed and solved with the particle swarm optimization method. the model first carries out an exhaustive enumeration search for all feasible sets of p...

Interactions in swarm robotic search are explored for intelligence emergence based on Extended Particle Swarm Optimization (EPSO) model. For this end, the best combination of proper properties in typical versions of PSO is transferred to swarm robotic search. Synchronous / asynchronous communication modes and respective control strategies under conditions of parallel distributed control are com...

Neutral orbitally excited P-wave charm mesons have been reconstructed in the D * ± π ∓ final state and the charm-strange meson D ± s1 (2536) was found in the D * ± K 0 s final state. A search for radially excited charm mesons in the D * ± π + π − final state has also been performed. A search for a charm pentaquark state near 3.1 GeV was made in the decay mode D * ± p ∓. Using more than 40,000 r...

Based on BACODINE network notification the Whipple Observatory gamma-ray telescope has been used to search for the delayed TeV counterpart to BATSE-detected gamma-ray bursts. In the fast slew mode, any point in the sky can be reached within two minutes of the burst notification. The search strategy, necessary because of the uncertainty in burst position and limited FOV of the camera, is described.

We describe a new stochastic search algorithm for linear regression models called the bounded mode stochastic search (BMSS). We make use of BMSS to perform variable selection and classification as well as to construct sparse dependency networks. Furthermore, we show how to determine genetic networks from genomewide data that involve any combination of continuous and discrete variables. We illus...
