We report on the experimental observation of fluid flow caused by propagation of femtosecond filaments in dry air. We find that the ionization of the medium deposits a non-negligible amount of heat, which creates vortices in a semi-confined glass cylinder. We confirm the influence of thermal gradients on vortex formation by the use of a heated wire in a similar configuration.

We experienced five cases of Salmonella oranienburg infection in children living in Saitama prefecture. Thereafter the number of patients with S. oranienburg infection increased not only in Saitama (55 cases) but also in other parts of Japan in 1999 (1505 cases) in 1999. The source of S. oranienburg infection was identified as a snack made from semi-dry cuttlefish.

A new semi-empirical algorithm for the radial distribution of dose is compared with available data. The algorithm is used to calculate the inactivation cross section for dry enzymes and viruses using an extended target model of a 1-hit detector. Agreement with data is at about the 15% level, approximating the precision of the data itself.
