A large body of work on monkey cranial metrics (involving conclusions about interspecific variation, sexual dimorphism, and ontogeny) depends on the assumptions that growth effectively ceases with dental maturity and that intraspecific variation is negligible. We test these assumptions by examining variation in 39 measurements of 166 dentally mature Alouatta palliata skulls from animals found d...

Size at maturity, fecundity, and reproductive periodicity were estimated for the spotted ratWsh, Hydrolagus colliei (Lay and Bennett, 1839), oV the coast of California, Oregon, and Washington. Maximum body size and size at median maturity were greater for females than males. Skeletal muscle concentrations of the steroid hormones testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) predicted similar, but slightl...

Previous studies suggest that severe sexual sadism and psychopathy are phenotypically different, although both are characterized by deficits in emotional processing. We assessed empathic capacity in a sample of 12 sexual sadists in comparison with 23 non-sadistic offenders using the Multifaceted Empathy Test (MET). All participants were forensic patients under mandatory treatment orders who had...

A new method of inducing self-fertilization, uniparental cytogamy, yields homozygous germinal and somatic genotypes in the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila. Progeny are highly fertile and show a marked tendency for precocious sexual maturity. This method is highly effective in protocols designed to generate and express nonlethal dominant or recessive mutations.

Isolation calls produced by dependent young are a fundamental form of communication. For species in which vocal signals remain important to adult communication, the function and social context of vocal behavior changes dramatically with the onset of sexual maturity. The ontogenetic relationship between these distinct forms of acoustic communication is surprisingly under-studied. We conducted a ...
