Autonomic dysfunction related to seizures may give rise to a broad spectrum of cardiovascular abnormalities. Among these, ictal bradycardia and conduction delays may be encountered. Failure to recognize these abnormalities may contribute to sudden, unexplained death in epilepsy patients. We report a case of a Haitian female with temporal lobe epilepsy associated with recurrent sinus pauses.
BACKGROUND Congenital heart block (CHB) is a disease that affects the offspring of mothers with autoimmune diseases. We recently reported that maternal sera containing antibodies against SSA/Ro and SSB/La ribonucleoproteins (positive IgG) inhibited L-type Ca current in isolated cardiac myocytes and induced sinus bradycardia in a murine model of CHB. The direct interaction of positive IgG with L...
BACKGROUND When complete atrioventricular block (AVB) occurs, infranodal escape rhythms are essential to prevent bradycardic death. The role of T-type Ca(2+) channels in pacemaking outside the sinus node is unknown. We investigated the role of T-type Ca(2+) channels in escape rhythms and bradycardia-related ventricular tachyarrhythmias after AVB in mice. METHODS AND RESULTS Adult male mice la...
A12-lead ECG was obtained from a 72-year-old man with a core body temperature of 85°F (Figure 1). The ECG shows severe sinus bradycardia with prolonged PR, prolonged QRS complex, prolonged QT interval, and an extra deflection at the end of the QRS complex (Osborn waves) (arrows). A second 12-lead ECG obtained 24 hours later, after the patient had been rewarmed to 98°F, was normal (Figure 2). Hy...
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Although atrial pacing is a more physiological mode of stimulation in sinus node dysfunction, the pacing modes most often are used DDD and VVI. The aim of our study was to demonstrate that AAI/AAIR pacing is effective and safe by analyzing the complications and mortality of this pacing mode in a long-term follow-up study. PATIENTS AND METHOD Between 1982 and 2000 d...
Middle ear is separated from middle cranial fossa by thin plate of bone known as tegmen tympani and from the sigmoid sinus by sinus plate. The chronic middle ear disease such as granulation or Choesteotoma can errode tegmen tympani or posteriorly the sinus plate and lead to intracranial complications. The most important to otolaryngologist is the brain abscess and sinus thrombophlebitis. Any pa...
ABST RACT This case report describes a 3 years old neutered female Shih Tzu dog presented to the Hebrew University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (HUVTH) after being treated by a local veterinarian for gastrointestinal signs. At the hospital, the dog demonstrated sinus bradycardia with occasional sinus block. The dog was noticed chewing leaves from a flower arrangement contained Nerium oleander b...
OBJECTIVE To study the clinical course and outcome of fetal sinus bradycardia (SB) due to maternal antibody-induced sinus node dysfunction. METHODS We reviewed the maternal, prenatal, and postnatal findings of fetuses with SB associated with elevated maternal anti-SSA/Ro and anti-SSB/La antibodies. RESULTS Of the 6 cases diagnosed prenatally, 3 had isolated SB persisting after birth and had...
