Abstract The angular momentum Jinc of a light beam can be changed by passage through a slab of crystal. When the beam is incident along the optic axis of a biaxial crystal, which may also possess optical activity (chirality), the final angular momentum J can have both orbital (Jorb) and spin (Jsp) contributions, which we calculate paraxially exactly for arbitrary biaxiality and chirality and in...

A hybrid plasmonic waveguide structure is proposed and fabricated for low-loss lightwave guiding along a metal stripe core. By embedding Au stripe in dual slab waveguides with high refractive-index contrast, the field of the guided mode is confined more in the two dielectric core layers. Thus, the propagation loss is significantly reduced. The guided mode is like a combination of a fundamental ...

a full scale physical model of a thin slab caster with a four-hole design submerged entry nozzle (sen) was constructed. on the basis of the dimensionless reynolds and froude similitude criteria, the fluid flow in a full-scale model is similar to that of the actual system and, hence, the data obtained from the water model can be applied to the actual system. in order to determine the optimum ope...

Distributions of slabs within Earth's mantle are increasingly used to reconstruct past subduction zones, based on first-order assumptions that sink vertically after slab break-off, and thus delineate paleo-trench locations. Non-vertical motions, which occur prior represent a potentially significant source error for slab-based plate reconstructions, but poorly understood. We constrain lateral mi...

The casimir pressure on a non ideal conducting slab is calculated. Using a simple model for the conductivity according to which the slab is perfectly conducting at frequencies below plasma frequency ωp and perfectly transparent above such frequency, it is found that the vacuum pressure on each surface of the slab is h̄ω p 24πc which is finite without removal of any divergence.

We directly measure optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) by embedding a photodetector into a photonic crystal slab. The BICs observed in our experiment are the result of accidental phase matching between incident, reflected and in-plane waves at seemingly random wave vectors in the photonic band structure. Our measurements were confirmed through a rigorously coupled-wave analysis simula...

We have carried out a theoretical study of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of both bulk and supercell slab CeCo2. The calculations are based on first-principles density functional theory with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and also with the GGA+U scheme. Both GGA and GGA+U calculations predict bulk CeCo2 to be nonmagnetic, in agreement with experiments. However, calcu...

Abstraction and slicing are both techniques for reducing the size of the state space to be inspected during verification. In the paper [1], we present a new model checking procedure for infinite-state concurrent systems that interleaves automatic abstraction refinement, which splits states according to new predicates obtained by Craig interpolation, with slicing, which removes irrelevant states...

A mathematical model of a continuous reheating furnace has been developed to identify the design and operating parameters that significantly affect furnace performance. In this study, the furnace is modeled 3 dimensionally and theMonte Carlomethod is used to find the overall absorption factor. The overall absorption factor is then used to calculate the energy balance for furnace walls, the gas,...

In this paper the effect of photonic band gap on the group velocity of reflected pulse from a dielectric slab doped with two-level or three-level atoms has been investigated. It is assumed that the slab is sandwiched between a uniform medium (like vacuum) and a one-dimensional photonic crystal. It is shown that the reflected pulse from the slab doped with two-level (three-level) atoms will be...
