Discrete piles are used to stabilise infrastructure slopes, especially where there is insufficient additional land to allow construction of large toe berms or regrading of the slope. Compared with more conventional structures such as retaining walls, there are few field data on how discrete piles typically bend and displace under slope loading. This paper presents the results from monitoring a ...
This paper presents science-based, interim noise exposure criteria for the onset of direct physical injury in fish exposed to the impact sound associated with pile driving. This paper provides an objective, scientific assessment of pile driving exposures which are injurious to fish. It does not explicitly consider policies of regulatory agencies which are based on mandated legal requirements an...
The control of the expression of the pilin gene (pilE) in Neisseria gonorrhoeae under a wide variety of growth conditions has been studied. The expression of pilE was measured using transcriptional fusions between pilE and the gene encoding chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT), and the level of pilin production was measured by Western blot analysis. Many of the conditions tested affected bot...
Underwater sound generated by pile driving during construction of offshore wind farms is a major concern in many countries. This paper reports on the acoustic stress responses in young European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (68 and 115 days old), based on four in situ experiments as close as 45 m from a pile driving activity. As a primary stress response, whole-body cortisol seemed to be too se...
We relate the pressure "dip" observed at the bottom of a sand pile prepared by successive avalanches to the stress profile obtained on sheared granular layers in response to a localized vertical overload. We show that, within a simple anisotropic elastic analysis, the skewness and the tilt of the response profile caused by shearing provide a qualitative agreement with the sand pile dip effect. ...
We study one event of reconnection onset associated to a small substorm on 27 September 2006 by using Cluster observations at inter-spacecraft separation of about 10 000 km. We focus on the acceleration of suprathermal electrons during different stages of reconnection. We show that several distinct stages of acceleration occur: (1) moderate acceleration during reconnection of pre-existing plasm...
Nanoindentation morphologies of crystalline copper have been probed at the grain scale. Experimental tests have been conducted on nanocrystalline (NC), ultrafine-grained (UFG), and coarse-grained (CG) copper samples with a new Berkvoich indenter at the strain rate of 0.04/s without holding time at an indentation depth of 2000 nm at room temperature. As the grain size increases, the height of th...
There is increasing concern about the effects of pile driving and other anthropogenic (human-generated) sound on fishes. Although there is a growing body of reports examining this issue, little of the work is found in the peer-reviewed literature. This review critically examines both the peer-reviewed and 'grey' literature, with the goal of determining what is known and not known about effects ...
The case studied in the paper proves that thickening the pile cap is an effective seismic retrofit alternative to strengthen a pile group foundation. Unlike the typical seismic retrofitting of foundation, the proposed method eliminates the need to drive long piles into existing bridge substructures, substantially reducing cost, construction time and traffic interruption. The method thickens the...
