Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common malignant mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. The most common sites of metastasis are the liver and the peritoneum, whereas metastasis to soft tissue is rare. The authors present the case of a 78-year-old male with a soft tissue metastasis of a GIST and the current literature is reviewed.

PURPOSE Hypoxia is associated with malignant progression and poor outcome in several human tumors, including soft tissue sarcoma. Recent studies have suggested that carbonic anhydrase (CA) IX is an intrinsic marker of hypoxia, and that CA IX correlates with poor prognosis in several types of carcinoma. The aim of this study was to quantify the extent of CA IX expression and to investigate wheth...

Myoepithelioma of the skin and soft tissue is a newly recognized entity with characteristic histopathologic and immunohistochemical features, which should be differentiated from a variety of tumors. Myoepitheliomas are in the same pathologic spectrum of mixed tumors and parachordomas. Tumors comprised mostly of myoepithelial cells without obvious epithelial differentiation are designated myoepi...

BACKGROUND Soft-tissue neoplasms embody a histologically diverse group of mesenchymal tumors. Oftentimes the histopathological diagnosis of soft-tissue tumors is challenging due to overlapping pathological features. METHODS We reviewed the current and most importantly known recurrent or tumor-specific genetic abnormalities involving soft-tissue tumors, focusing on how they are useful in worki...

Systemic treatment options for bone and soft tissue sarcomas remained unchanged until the 2000s. These cancers presented challenges in new drug development partly because of their rarity and heterogeneity. Many new molecular targeting drugs have been tried in the 2010s, and some were approved for bone and soft tissue sarcoma. As one of the first molecular targeted drugs approved for solid malig...

BACKGROUND Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is a key signaling molecule and a central cytoplasmic transcription factor, implicated in the regulation of growth. Its aberrant activation has been demonstrated to correlate with many types of human malignancy. However, whether constitutive STAT3 signaling plays a key role in the survival and growth of soft-tissue tumors is ...

Aggressive fibromatosis also known as extra abdominal desmoid tumor is an uncommon benign tumor of soft tissue origin with fibroblastic proliferationSince the tumor is locally aggressive, the lesion may be misdiagnosed as low -grade fibrosarcoms. It accounts for 0.03% - 0.1% of all body tumors and 3% of all soft tissue tumors. Only 10% to 15% of these lesions occur in head and neck, usually in ...

Twenty-nine soft tissue masses were studied with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which proved to be useful in the preoperative evaluation of these lesions. Other imaging modalities employed had significant limitations. Plain films were of little value because of the intrinsically low contrast of soft tissues. Angiography was not necessary unless MRI suggested a vascular lesion or proximity to ...

Background/introduction Soft tissue tumors are a heterogeneous group of tumors arising from connective tissues. These tumors may be benign, benign but locally aggressive, or malignant. Surgery either alone or in combination with adjuvant therapies such as radiation or chemotherapy can potentially cure a patient with a soft tissue tumor. The morbidity and complications associated with treatment ...
