We introduce a framework for estimating the effect that a binary treatment has on a binary outcome in the presence of unobserved confounding. The methodology is applied to a case study which uses data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey and whose aim is to estimate the effect of private health insurance on health care utilization. Unobserved confounding arises when variables which are ass...

abstract i the purpose of this study was to launch a thorough investigation concerning the possibility of differing orientations to the writing proficiency construct by native and non-native english speaking teacher raters. it mainly revolved around the international english language testing system (ielts) that is widely administered and employed as a measure of general proficiency in englis...

testing plays a vital role in any language teaching program. it allows teachers and stakeholders, including program administrators, parents, admissions officers and prospective employers to be assured that the learners are progressing according to an accepted standard (douglas, 2010). the problems currently facing language testers have both practical and theoretical implications but the first i...

This paper investigates the mathematical framework of multiresolution analysis based on irregularly spaced knots sequence. Our presentation is based on the construction of nested nonuniform spline multiresolution spaces. From these spaces, we present the construction of orthonormal scaling and wavelet basis functions on bounded intervals. For any arbitrary degree of the spline function, we prov...

We prove that the zeros of the derivatives of any order of a B-spline are increasing functions of its interior knots. We then prove that if the interior knots of two Bsplines interlace, then the zeros of their derivatives of any order also interlace. The same results are obtained for Chebyshevian B-splines.

In this paper we present a unified discussion of different approaches to the identification of smoothing spline analysis of variance (ANOVA) models: (i) the “classical” approach (in the line of Wahba in Spline Models for Observational Data, 1990; Gu in Smoothing Spline ANOVA Models, 2002; Storlie et al. in Stat. Sin., 2011) and (ii) the State-Dependent Regression (SDR) approach of Young in Nonl...

We model sparse functional data from multiple subjects with a mixed-effects regression spline. In this model, the expected values for any subject (conditioned on the random effects) can be written as the sum of a population curve and a subject-specific deviate from this population curve. The population curve and the subject-specific deviates are both modeled as free-knot b-splines with k and k'...

In medical statistics, the logistic model is a popular choice for the analysis of the dependence between a response variable and one or more explanatory variables. The response variable is the log odds and it is a linear function of explanatory variables. This type of modeling is restrictive, as the behaviour of the log odds can be best represented by a smooth non-linear function. Thus, we use ...

We consider Bayesian inference in semiparametric mixed models (SPMMs) for longitudinal data. SPMMs are a class of models that use a nonparametric function to model a time effect, a parametric function to model other covariate effects, and parametric or nonparametric random effects to account for the within-subject correlation. We model the nonparametric function using a Bayesian formulation of ...

Introduction Statistical analysis of the data on the Earth's surface was a favorite subject among many researchers. Such data can be related to animal's migration from a region to another position. Then, statistical modeling of their paths helps biological researchers to predict their movements and estimate the areas that are most likely to constitute the presence of the animals. From a geome...
