We report the first experimental realization of magnetic trapping of a sample of cold radicals following multistage Zeeman deceleration of a pulsed supersonic beam. H atoms seeded in a supersonic expansion of Kr have been decelerated from an initial velocity of 520 m/s to 100 m/s in a 12-stage Zeeman decelerator and loaded into a magnetic quadrupole trap by rapidly switching the fields of the t...

Utilizing experimental techniques of Nano-particle based Planar Laser Scattering (NPLS) and schlieren photography, the flow patterns and mixing characteristics of a designed HYLTE (HYpersonic Low TEmperature) nozzle were investigated in this paper. In order to visualize the non-reacting flowfield of supersonic angled jets into a supersonic crossflow in the HYLTE nozzle, a testing section with w...

We report the slowing of a supersonic beam by elastic reflection from a receding atomic mirror. We use a pulsed supersonic nozzle to generate a 511+/-9 m/s beam of helium that we slow by reflection from a Si(111)-H(1x1) crystal placed on the tip of a spinning rotor. We were able to reduce the velocity of helium by 246 m/s and show that the temperature of the slowed beam is lower than 250 mK in ...

An attached oblique shock wave is generated when a sharp solid projectile flies supersonically in the air. We study the linear stability of oblique shock waves in steady supersonic flow under three dimensional perturbation in the incoming flow. Euler system of equations for isentropic gas model is used. The linear stability is established for shock front with supersonic downstream flow, in addi...

We performed a series of three-dimensional numerical simulations of supersonic homogeneous Euler turbulence with adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) and effective grid resolution up to 10243 zones. Our experiments describe nonmagnetized driven supersonic turbulent flows with an isothermal equation of state. Mesh refinement on shocks and shear is implemented to cover dynamically important structures ...

Hydrodynamic simulations of granular convection predict the existence of supersonic flows covering∼3-4% of the solar surface at any time, but these flows have not been detected unambigously as yet. Using data from the spectropolarimeter aboard the Hinode satellite, I present direct evidence of fast horizontal plasma motions in quiet Sun granules. Their visibility increases toward the limb due t...

The design optimization of a wing for supersonic transport by means of Multiobjective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) is presented. The objective function is to minimize the drag for transonic cruise, the drag for supersonic cruise and the bending moment at the wing root for the supersonic condition. The wing shape is defined by planform, thickness distributions and warp shapes, in total of 66 design ...

Interaction between the normal shock wave and the turbulent boundary layer in a supersonic nozzle becomes complex with an increase of a Mach number just before the shock wave. When the shock wave is strong enough to separate the boundary layer, the shock wave is bifurcated, and the 2nd and 3rd shock waves are formed downstream of the shock wave. The effect of a series of shock waves thus formed...

[1] The Titan-Saturn plasma interaction is studied using a global numerical kinetic model. The developed selfconsistent three-dimensional quasi-neutral hybrid model is used to study Titan’s interaction with supersonic and subsonic plasma flow. The subsonic flow case represents Titan in the Kronian magnetosphere during the Voyager-1 flyby. The supersonic and weakly supermagnetosonic flow cases a...

Modeling the structure of molecular clouds depends upon good methods to statistically compare simulations with observations in order to constrain the models. Here we characterize a suite of hydrodynamical and magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of supersonic turbulence using an averaged wavelet transform, the ∆-variance, that has been successfully used to characterize observations. We find ...
