OBJECTIVE To describe the results of fronto-orbital advancement and remodelling for craniosynostosis in children. STUDY DESIGN Case series. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY Department of Plastic Surgery, Combined Military Hospital, Rawalpindi, from June 2009 to June 2012. METHODOLOGY All the patients with cranial suture synostosis operated were included in the study. Those patients who were lo...
AIMS To demonstrate the expression patterns of two fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFR-2 and FGFR-3) in the normal human fetal orbit. METHODS 6 microm orbital slide sections were prepared from 12 week old human fetal material obtained within established ethical guidelines. Radioactive in situ hybridisation techniques were used to demonstrate the expression patterns of FGFR-2 and FGFR-3 w...
AIM Anterior plagiocephaly usually occurs with premature synostosis of the ipsilateral half of the coronal suture. The forehead is flattened on the affected side, with a backward and upward displacement of the affected orbit. The bulging of the calvaria may occur in the contralateral parietal area. MATERIAL AND METHODS This article presents the surgical techniques used over 7 years to treat p...
INTRODUCTION There is limited craniofacial literature on the complications of helmet therapy and controversy regarding the effects of inadequate orthotic helmet therapy. The authors present a case of inadvertently prolonged orthotic helmet therapy after endoscopic strip craniectomy for isolated sagittal synostosis. CASE PRESENTATION A two-month-old Caucasian baby underwent uncomplicated endos...
OBJECTIVES - To understand how surgical interventions impact the organization and internal integration of the major components of the skull, we address the functional and developmental relationships during perinatal development. METHODS - A number of methods for quantifying modularity and integration of morphological data are available. Here, measures derived from three-dimensional computed tom...
Heterozygous loss of Twist1 function causes coronal synostosis in both mice and humans. We showed previously that in mice this phenotype is associated with a defect in the neural crest-mesoderm boundary within the coronal suture, as well as with a reduction in the expression of ephrin A2 (Efna2), ephrin A4 (Efna4) and EphA4 in the coronal suture. We also demonstrated that mutations in human EFN...
AIM The premature closure of the metopic suture results in metopic synostosis, also known as trigonocephaly. However, there is a group of children who have only a frontal metopic ridge, obvious with inspection and fingertip palpation, without the clinical features of trigonocephaly. This study aims to report a group of children with metopic ridge with a special emphasis on the definition and th...
Little is known about genes that underlie isolated single-suture craniosynostosis. In this study, we hypothesize that rare copy number variants (CNV) in patients with isolated single-suture craniosynostosis contain genes important for cranial development. Using whole genome array comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), we evaluated DNA from 186 individuals with single-suture craniosynostosis f...
We describe a patient with a traumatic spondylolisthesis of L5 and multiple, bilateral pedicle fractures from L2 to L5. Conservative treatment was chosen, with eventual neurological recovery and bony union. We are not aware of previous reports of this pattern of injury.
