A middle-aged lady with an asymptomatic, hyperpigmented plaque on the thigh: what is your diagnosis?
CLINICAL PRESENTATIONA 44-year-old lady came to a dermatology clinic due to an asymptomatic, hyperpigmented plaque on her right thigh since 4 months ago. On physical exam, hypertrichosis on the lesion was notable (Figure 1). Rubbing the lesion resulted in erythema and edema of the lesion. She had no systemic disease and her family history was unremarkable.
Systemic lupus erythematosus is generally recognized to be a multisystem autoimmune disease with kidney involvement. However, the occurrence of other non-lupus glomerulopathies has been rarely reported in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. It is well known that lupus nephritis may switch over time to another class according to the World Health Organization classification. It seems like...
Three cases of myelosclerosis associated with systemic lupus erythematosus are described. The probable role of systemic lupus erythematosus in the initiation of myelonecrosis and subsequent myelosclerosis is discussed.
Lupus panniculitis is a rare variant of lupus erythematosus. It may occur as a separate disease or coexist with systemic or discoid lupus erythematosus. It is characterized by persistent, tender and hard nodules localised on the face, arms, shoulders, breast and buttocks. Healing of lesions is associated with scarring, lipoatrophy and rarely ulceration. Treatment of lupus panniculitis depends o...
fifty-seven patients suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus with different clinical features were studied from various aspects of immunological abnormalities, including anti-nuclear antibodies; anti-dna; anti-sm (smith's antigen); and, other extractable nuclear antigens. the tests employed were microhemagglutination, counter immunoelecterphoresis, and radio immunoassay (ria). the compariso...
INTRODUCTION The association of human immunodeficiency virus and immune dysfunction leading to development of autoimmune markers is well described, but human immunodeficiency virus infection is relatively protective for the development of systemic lupus erythematosus. In contrast, development of systemic lupus erythematosus with hepatitis C and with interferon therapy is well described in a num...
matosus. A similar case of Sjogren syndrome and subsequent development of systemic lupus erythematosus has been reported in a 12 year old boy.3 In our patient, two points remain to be clarified, whether the seizures were the first symptom of systemic lupus erythematosus central nervous system involvement and whether any relation can be found between the phenobarbitone treatment and the onset of...
Proliferative lupus nephritis is a strong predictor of morbidity and mortality in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Despite improvements in the management of lupus nephritis, a significant number of the patients do not respond to immunosuppressive therapy and progress to end-stage renal failure. In order to optimise the diagnostic strategy and treatment of patients with proliferative ...
BACKGROUND Thyroid autoimmunity is considered the most common type of organ-specific autoimmune disorder and can be associated with other autoimmune endocrine disorders or non-endocrine diseases. Systemic lupus erythematosus is a prototypical autoimmune disorder with multifactorial etiology. The pathogenesis and development of the disease may result from a loss of immune tolerance and the resul...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Multiple sclerosis and neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus are autoimmune diseases with similar CNS inflammatory and neurodegenerative characteristics. Our aim was to investigate white matter tract changes and their association with cognitive function in patients with MS and those with neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus compared with healthy controls ...
