When plasmodia of the true slime mold Physarum were exposed to unfavorable conditions presented as three consecutive pulses at constant intervals, they reduced their locomotive speed in response to each episode. When the plasmodia were subsequently subjected to favorable conditions, they spontaneously reduced their locomotive speed at the time when the next unfavorable episode would have occurr...

Variability in cell properties can be an important driving mechanism behind spatiotemporal patterns in biological systems, as the degree of cell-to-cell differences determines the capacity of cells to locally synchronize and, consequently, form patterns on a larger spatial scale. In principle, certain features of spatial patterns emerging with time may be regulated by variability or, more speci...

Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) is a medicinal herb that has long enjoyed traditional use as a remedy for migraine headache pain. The aerial parts of Feverfew (flowers, leaves and stems) contain parthenolide (a sesquiterpene lactone) which is believed to be responsible for the plant's biological activity. Dried feverfew aerial parts should contain approximately 0.2-0.5 wt.% parthenolide and adu...

In our current study, phytochemical analysis and antibacterial activity of leaf extracts T. parthenium were assessed. Qualitative screening was carried using standard procedures quantitative for estimation total phenolic content (TPC) determined by spectrophotometric method. The accomplished disc diffusion assay, determination minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) bactericidal (MBC) against tw...

Aequorin is a photoprotein which emits light in response to changes in free calcium concentration. When aequorin was microinjected into plasmodia of Physarum polycephalum, light emission varied in synchrony with the motile oscillations of the organisms. Therefore, movement is correlated which changes in the concentration of free calcium.
