We report on the operation of a highly sensitive terahertz imaging system relying on a planar metallic plasmonic crystal as a terahertz surface plasmon resonant (THz-SPR) sensor. The terahertz imaging is based on the resonantly enhanced transmission phenomenon of a periodically perforated metal film. The detection sensitivity and the imaging contrast for small amounts of substance are considera...

Pronounced resonant absorption and frequency dispersion associated with an excitation of collective 2D plasmons have been observed in terahertz (0.5-4THz) transmission spectra of grating-gate 2D electron gas AlGaN/GaN HEMT (high electron mobility transistor) structures at cryogenic temperatures. The resonance frequencies correspond to plasmons with wavevectors equal to the reciprocal-lattice ve...

We study surface-plasmon-enhanced terahertz transmission through subwavelength metallic hole arrays of sub-skin-depth thickness. Dynamic evolution of surface-plasmon resonance in terms of array thickness is characterized by use of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in the frequency range 0.1-4.5 THz. A critical thickness of lead array film is observed, above which surface-plasmon coupling of te...

We discuss the application of diffraction theory to the reshaping of freely propagating terahertz pulses by narrow apertures. This is accomplished by using two separate electrooptic sampling detectors. The first contains a narrow electrode geometry that does not modify the frequency content of the incident terahertz field, while the second contains a narrow gap between two large electrodes. The...

We discuss the design and operation of widely-tunable terahertz sources based on Cherenkov intra-cavity difference-frequency generation in mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers. Laser chips are integrated into a Littrow-type external cavity system. Devices demonstrate continuous terahertz emission tuning at room temperature with a record tuning range from 1.2 THz to 5.9 THz and peak power output ...

We describe the terahertz emission from multiple filaments in air in the presence of an external electric field. A strong enhancement of the radiated terahertz energy is obtained by the combined effect of terahertz field interference and presence of a static electric field.

We present a potential of photonic technologies originally developed for fiber-optic communications for use in contemporary terahertz-wave applications and demonstrate several examples, including a highprecision time-continuous terahertz-wave signal and terahertz-wave band noise generators, imaging with CW and noise signals, and wireless communications.

Classical masking aperture methods are found to be mostly inaccurate to determine the terahertz beam size in terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) experiments, owing to complex diffraction effects. Here, we present a simple and reliable method for measuring beam waists in terahertz TDS. It is based on the successive diffraction by an opaque disk followed by a small circular aperture.

We report a new microfluidic emitter for nano-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (nanoESI-MS), made from polyimide tape. In contrast to the conventional pulled glass capillary emitters typically used for nanoESI-MS, these new polyimide emitters are simple and inexpensive to make, and are disposable after a single use. Thus, sample contamination and clogging are never a problem when analy...

Recently, a next-generation heterodyne mixer detector— a hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixer employing a superconducting microbridge—has gradually opened up terahertz-band astronomy. The surrounding state-of-the-art technologies including fabrication processes, 4 K cryostats, cryogenic low-noise amplifiers, local oscillator sources, micromachining techniques, and spectrometers, as well as the HE...
