Thirteen Neisseria meningitidis clinical isolates from Africa, Asia, and the United States for which the tetracycline MICs were elevated (> or =8 microg/ml) were examined for 14 recognized resistance genes. Only the drug efflux mechanism encoded by tet(B) was detected. All isolates were in serogroup A, belonged to complex ST-5, and were closely related by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis.
This paper reports the first case of Haemophilus quentini bacteremia with reduced susceptibility to levofloxacin and resistance to nalidixic acid identified by 16S rRNA sequencing. There was an S 84 L substitution in gyrA and an S 84 I substitution in par C. The isolate had co-resistance to ampicillin (beta-lactamase positive) and tetracycline mediated by the tet(B) gene.
Multidrug resistance to streptomycin, sulfonamide, and tetracycline (AMR-SSuT) was identified in 156 of 171 isolates of Escherichia coli O157:H7 of phage types 23, 45, and 67. In 154 AMR-SSuT isolates, resistance was encoded by strA, strB, sul2, and tet(B), which in 59 of 63 tested isolates were found clustered together on the chromosome within the cdiA locus.
