Among 128 Streptococcus gallolyticus (Streptococcus bovis) isolates, 77.7% were resistant to tetracyclines and contained tet(M) and/or tet(L) and/or tet(O). A total of 59.4% had macrolide resistance and contained erm(B) and, rarely, mef(A). Among the one-third of isolates highly resistant to kanamycin and streptomycin, most harbored aphA3 and aad-6 genes.

Mycobacterium massiliense is a nontuberculous mycobacterium associated with human infections. We report here the draft genome sequence of M. massiliense strain M159, isolated from the bronchial aspirate of a patient who had a pulmonary infection. This strain showed genotypic and in vitro resistance to a number of tetracyclines and beta-lactam antibiotics.

Susceptibilities of 104 Propionibacterium acnes isolates to each of 22 antimicrobial agents was evaluated by broth microdilution. These isolates were susceptible to all of the test agents except metronidazole. N-Formimidoyl thienamycin, a penem coded Sch 29482, and penicillin ranked first, second, and third, respectively, in activity and were significantly more active than other penicillins, ce...

We present here the draft genome sequence of the first New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM-1)-producing Escherichia coli strain, belonging to sequence type 155 (ST155), isolated in Peru. Assembly of this draft genome resulted in 5,061,184 bp, revealing a clinically significant resistome for β-lactams, aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, phenicols, sulfonamides, trimethoprim, and fluoroquinolones.

Nineteen E. faecium strains isolated from chicken caecum samples, collected in slaughterhouses and highly resistant to vancomycin or gentamicin, were coresistant to erythromycin, and/or tetracyclines, and/or streptogramins, and/or avilamycin. Multiple antibiotic resistance was related to the presence in various combinations of aac(6')-aph(2"), erm(B), emtA, mef(A), tet(L), tet(M), and vanA genes.

The synergistic potential of a range of biguanides, their triazine metabolites, tetracyclines, and pyrimethamine in combination with atovaquone has been assessed. All five biguanides tested interacted synergistically with atovaquone against Plasmodium falciparum in vitro. All of the other compounds tested were either additive or antagonistic.

The spectroscopic observation of 1268-nm emission of singlet oxygen photosensitized by tetracyclines in oxygenated solutions at room temperature is reported. In the series demeclocycline, tetracycline, and minocycline, the efficiency of singlet oxygen generation is found to parallel the clinical observation of relative frequency of phototoxicity of these antibiotics, suggesting singlet oxygen g...

Oral and topical antibiotics are commonly prescribed in dermatology to treat infectious skin disorders and inflammatory dermatoses. Prescribing data from 1999 to 2003 indicate that dermatologists write approximately 9 million oral antibiotic prescriptions annually, with tetracycline agents accounting for 65% and cephalosporins 10% of the total. The widespread use of oral tetracyclines relates p...

A novel series of fully synthetic 8-azatetracyclines was prepared and evaluated for antibacterial activity. Compounds were identified that overcome both efflux (tet(K)) and ribosomal protection (tet(M)) tetracycline resistance mechanisms and are active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. Two compounds were identified that exhibit comparable efficacy to marketed tetracyclines in i...

Here, we present the draft genome sequences of eight streptogramin-resistant Enterococcus species isolated from animals and an environmental source in the United States from 2001 to 2004. Antimicrobial resistance genes were identified conferring resistance to the macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramins, aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, beta-lactams, and glycopeptides.
