OBJECTIVE To highlight the usefulness of apixaban on intra-atrial thrombus that develops after previous treatment with warfarin. CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION A 69-year-old woman with a history of atrial fibrillation treated with warfarin presented with acute decompensated heart failure due to an episode of atrial fibrillation. Transesophageal echocardiogram revealed the presence of ...

Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have been reported to cause resolution of intracardiac thrombus, but there have been no reported cases of internal carotid arterial thrombus resolution. We report a case of a 76-year-old man in whom an internal carotid arterial thrombus resolved after administration of the NOAC dabigatran at a dose of 110  mg twice daily. This is the first repo...

Aortic root thrombus is an uncommon complication of continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVAD). We present the case of a 71-year-old man with ischemic cardiomyopathy who underwent destination therapy HeartMate II LVAD placement. Eighteen months later, he presented with a cerebrovascular accident followed by myocardial infarction. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed an aortic r...

Catheter-related right atrial thrombus (CRAT) can occur in patients with sickle cell disease, particularly if additional risk factors for thrombosis are present. Cardiac MRI may differentiate thrombi from other types of atrial masses. Treatment should include anticoagulation and the timing of catheter removal should balance the potential risk of embolization.

INTRODUCTION: Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) can lead to death by pulmonary embolism and is associated with chronic complications as part of the post-thrombotic syndrome. This is characterised by persistent limb pain, swelling and ulceration. Current treatments for DVT are mainly based on the use of anticoagulation, which prevents thrombus propagation, but has little effect on resolution. Studies...

UNLABELLED BACKGROUND The aim of the present study was to compare circulating levels of selected prothrombotic markers in patients suffering acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with and without left ventricular (LV) thrombus. METHODS One hundred patients with AMI treated with PCI on the LAD and dual antiplatelet therapy were included. LV thrombus formation was detected by echocardiography an...

AIMS Manual thrombectomy has been proposed as a strategy to reduce thrombus burden during primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). However, the effectiveness of manual thrombectomy in reducing thrombus burden is uncertain. In this substudy of the TOTAL (ThrOmbecTomy versus PCI ALone) trial, we compared the thrombus bur...

OBJECTIVES A calcified thrombus is rare, but needs to be recognized and to be differentiated from calcified nodule. METHODS We report a case of acute coronary syndrome and a large intracoronary mobile mass, which was identified as a calcified thrombus by optical frequency domain imaging and intravascular ultrasound. RESULTS Successful direct stenting indicated that mobile mass was a calcifi...

A 72-year-old woman was admitted to our institution because of sudden chest pain. Emergency coronary angiography revealed thrombotic occlusion of the distal right coronary artery. A large cylindrical thrombus was retrieved from her distal right coronary artery using a thrombus aspiration catheter. IVUS showed minimal atherosclerosis and moderate ectatic change at the proximal right coronary art...

To the Editor: We have read with interest the article by Mongeon et al 1 related to thrombectomy in acute myocardial infarction. Since the introduction of the first device in the interventional arena a decade ago, we have used a long list of different designs with varying clinical results, frequently disappointing in comparison with the expectations. Although the hypothesis of thrombus eliminat...
