Although computational considerations suggest that a resource-limited memory system may have to trade off capacity for generalization ability, such a trade-off has not been demonstrated in the past. We describe a simple model of memory that exhibits this trade-off and describe its performance in a variety of tasks.

The physical demands of rapid and economical running differ from those of physical fighting such that functional trade-offs may prevent simultaneous evolution of optimal performance in both behaviours. Here we test three hypotheses of functional trade-off by measuring determinants of limb musculoskeletal function in two breeds of domestic dogs that have undergone intense artificial selection fo...

Banks normally trade-off the amount of loans created by risk piled up in their assets portfolios. However, performance can induce a ‘search for yield’ or ‘gamble to survive’ behaviour. Using sample 149 European banks during period 2001–2016, we show that management hypothesis holds after 2007–2008 financial crisis and large banks. Contrarily, moral hazard hypothesis, under which practise excess...

One of the most important tasks in multi-objective optimization is "trade-off analysis" which aims to make the total balance among objective functions. The trade-off relation among alternatives can be shown as Pareto frontier. In cases with two or three objective functions, the set of Pareto optimal solutions in the objective function space (i.e., Pareto frontier) can be depicted relatively eas...

Individuals do not have complete information about the environment and therefore they face a trade-off between gathering information (exploration) and gathering resources (exploitation). Studies have shown individual differences in components of this trade-off but how stable these strategies are in a population and the intrinsic drivers of these differences is not well understood. Top marine pr...

This paper focuses on the trade-off between the deduplication rate and the processing penalty in backup system which uses a conventional variable chunking method. The trade-off is a nonlinear negative correlation if the chunk size is fixed. In order to analyze quantitatively the trade-off all over the factors, a simulation approach is taken and clarifies the several correlations among chunk siz...

wind erosion is a major environmental issue affecting land resources and socio-economic settings in iran. this paper outlines a study undertaken to provide a new tool to manage wind erosion from physical and economic perspectives. the southern part of the varamin plain in south of tehran is used as a case study. the focus of this study is on exploring the economic and physical impacts of 16 veg...

this paper explores the leverage determinants across firms’ sizesbased on the two main theories behind the capital structure, the trade-offand the pecking order theories. a panel data is sued to find therelationship between capital structure and the variables that proxy forbenefits and costs of debt during 1990 to 2006. our findings show thatboth principles help to explain the capital structure...

Trade-off is one of the main design parameters in the field of electronic circuit design. Whereas smaller electronics devices which use less hardware due to techniques like hardware multiplexing or due to smaller devices created due to techniques developed by nanotechnology and MEMS, are more appealing, a trade-off between area, power and speed is inevitable. This paper analyses the trade-off i...

This paper studies how simultaneously liberalizing trade and tightening environmental policy affect welfare in a second-best world. We consider a three-good two-factor small open economy. We allow for non-tradables and for market power in the export market. The government is constrained to balance its budget at all times through distortionary taxes: a given income transfer has to be financed ou...
