A reduction of the transmission eigenvalue problem for multiplicative sign-definite perturbations of elliptic operators with constant coefficients to an eigenvalue problem for a non-selfadjoint compact operator is given. Sufficient conditions for the existence of transmission eigenvalues and completeness of generalized eigenstates for the transmission eigenvalue problem are derived. In the trac...

Extreme transcendental differential equations are found in many applications including geophysical climate change models. Solution of these systems in continuous time has only been feasible with the recent development of Runge−Kutta sampling transcendental differential equation solvers with Chebyshev function output such as Mathematica 9÷s NDSolve function. This paper presents the challenges an...

This is a survey paper on the recent development of the spectral theory of nonnegative tensors and its applications. After a brief review of the basic definitions on tensors, the H eigenvalue problem and the Z eigenvalue problem for tensors are studied separately. To the H eigenvalue problem for nonnegative tensors, the whole Perron-Frobenius theory for nonnegative matrices is completely extend...

An efficient semi-analytic method is developed for computing the band structures of two-dimensional photonic crystals which are triangular lattices of circular cylinders. The problem is formulated as an eigenvalue problem for a given frequency using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map of a hexagon unit cell. This is a linear eigenvalue problem even if the material is dispersive, where the eigenv...

Abstract This critical response to Dominic Smith’s ‘Taking Exception: Philosophy of Technology as a Multidimensional Problem Space’ begins by outlining the key contributions his essay, namely insightful approach transcendental, on one hand, and introduction topological problem space an image for thought, other. The then suggests ways furthering this addressing potential reservations about deter...

In this article, an account is given of the relation between naturalism and transcendentalism in the current project of naturalizing phenomenology. This project usually takes the transcendental point of view to be in conflict with the naturalizing attitude and the contemporary sciences of cognition thus seem to require cutting Husserlian phenomenology from its anti-naturalist roots, i.e., natur...

In earlier papers, the Bauer–Fike technique was applied to the ordinary eigenvalue problem Ax = λx, the generalized eigenvalue problem Ax = λBx and the matrix polynomial eigenvalue problem ∑m k=0 λAkx = 0. General multiple eigenvalues were dealt with and condition numbers were obtained for individual as well as clusters of eigenvalues. In this paper, we shall generalize the technique to the eig...

In this paper, we consider a higher-order three-point boundary value problem on time scales. We study the existence of solutions of a non-eigenvalue problem and of at least one positive solution of an eigenvalue problem. Later we establish the criteria for the existence of at least two positive solutions of a non-eigenvalue problem. Examples are also included to illustrate our results.
