Ten patients (14 eyes) with chronic simple glaucoma are described, each with features atypical for this disease and more suggestive that each had suffered an acute ischaemic optic neuropathy. Diagnosis of an acute ischaemic optic neuropathy in these cases is important, as treatment of ocular hypertension in the contralateral 'normal' eye may prevent a similar attack. Optic nerve disease and vis...
A patient with progressive visual loss was found to have an optic nerve sheath meningioma. The patient was treated with stereotactic radiotherapy, a computer-guided stereotactic technique that minimizes the risk of radiation-induced optic neuropathy. Six months after treatment, the patient was doing well and showed no signs of radiation-induced optic neuropathy.
The association between hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) and optic atrophy has been termed HMSN type VI. The autosomal dominant inheritance of this syndrome is reported. Three generations were affected with optic atrophy, which differed in some respects from classic dominant optic atrophy, and an asymptomatic, mainly sensory, neuropathy.
AIM To review the types of nonglaucomatous optic neuropathies seen in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. MATERIALS AND METHODS Medical case records of all cases of nonglaucomatous optic neuropathy seen in the Eye Clinic of University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt, Nigeria over a 5-year period were reviewed. Relevant data including patient demography, presenting visual acuity and intr...
T helper 17 (Th17) cells are strong inducers of numerous autoimmune diseases and inflammation. However, the role of Th17 cells and interleukin (IL)‑17 in traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) are yet to be elucidated. In the present study, a rat model of TON was established using a fluid percussion brain injury device. Th17 cells were found to be upregulated in the spleens of rats in the TON group. ...
PURPOSE To evaluate optic disc pallor using ImageJ in traumatic optic neuropathy (TON). METHODS This study examined unilateral TON patients. The optic disc was divided into 4 quadrants (temporal, superior, nasal, and inferior), consistent with the quadrants on optical coherence tomography (OCT) retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness maps. Optic disc photography was performed and disc pall...
OBJECTIVES To treat traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) with transplantation of human umbilical cord blood stem cells (hUCBSC) and explore how transplanted stem cells participate in the neuron repairing process. METHODS A total of 195 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to three groups: sham-surgery, optic nerve injury, and stem cell transplant group. Optic nerve injury was established in...
PURPOSE Dominant optic atrophy (DOA) is the most common form of autosomal inherited optic neuropathy, mainly caused by mutations in the optic atrophy 1 (OPA1) gene. The purpose of this study was to detect OPA1 gene mutations and associated phenotypes in Chinese patients with suspected hereditary optic neuropathy. METHODS A cohort of 193 Chinese families with suspected hereditary optic neuropa...
CONTEXT Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy is an important cause of progressive painless visual loss among young male patients. OBJECTIVE To report on a case of a young patient with a clinical and neurophysiological condition suggestive of Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy, confirmed by genetic testing. CASE REPORT We describe a 17-year-old male with progressive bilateral visual loss. Tw...
The universal definition of glaucoma is that it is an optic neuropathy with assorted etiology, which disturbs the optic nerve head, thereby resulting in visual loss and permanent impairment of visual function [2]. On the other hand, primary open angle glaucoma is an optic neuropathy that is commonly associated with increased intraocular pressure. High intraocular pressure leads to retinal gangl...
