We examine and compare several different classes of “balanced” block codes over q-ary alphabets, namely symbolbalanced (SB) codes, charge-balanced (CB) codes, and polaritybalanced (PB) codes. Known results on the maximum size and asymptotic minimal redundancy of SB and CB codes are reviewed. We then determine the maximum size and asymptotic minimal redundancy of PB codes and of codes which are ...

Interconnection is necessary for competition in telephony, but interconnection agreements are difficult to negotiate. With local service competition, entrants usually cannot duplicate the local loop, so interconnection also involves “renting” the incumbent’s local loops. An incumbent may object to being asked to permit use of its infrastructure by its competitors, in order to allow its competit...

A quantitative understanding of soil water content or soil water status is of great importance to many applications, such as landslide monitoring, rockfill dam health monitoring, precision agriculture, etc. In this paper, a feasibility study was conducted to monitor the soil water content in real time using permanent embedded piezoceramic-based transducers called smart aggregates (SAs). An acti...

Paul C. Rizzo Associates, Inc. (RIZZO) has developed efficient computational tools to evaluate the liquefaction potential of earth embankment dams located within high risk seismic regions. Two relevant case histories are the Saluda Dam and the Santee Cooper East Dam Extension, both structures susceptible to liquefaction, and located in South Carolina. Saluda Dam presents liquefaction risks with...

Dam safety assessments rely on the skill and experience of dam engineers but such expertise is not always easily transferred to new staff or conveyed in written reports. Many old dams have outlived their creators and puzzle those that see them for the first time. Eliane Alves Portela and Joao Bento explain how expert system technology can help avoid this DAM construction started over 2000 years...

An infinite dam with compound Poisson inputs and a statedependent release rate is considered. For this dam, we solve Kolmogorov’s backward differential equation to obtain the Laplace transforms of the first exit times in terms of a certain positive kernel. This allows us to provide an explicit expression for the Laplace transform of the wet period for a finite dam.

today water supply issue in large cities seems to be a big problem. this becomes more important with population growth and urbanization extension. to cope with this problem lots of irrigation and drainage projects have been implemented and operated that subsequently many socio- economic and cultural effects have been brought to the areas . the objective of the present study is to survey the soc...

An agricultural implement for underground application of rodenticide bait to control the Mediterranean pocket gopher (Microtus Duodecimcostatus) in fruit orchards has been designed and tested. The main objective of this research was to design and test the implement by using the finite element method (FEM) and considering a range of loads generated on most commonly used furrow openers in agricul...

Approximately 87% of flowering plants in the world are pollinated by animals. Bees are some of the most economically and ecologically important pollinators, necessary for the production of about one third of all crops. One such crop is highbush blueberry, grown throughout Rhode Island in small acreages. I conducted a survey of the bee species foraging on managed blueberry farms throughout Rhode...
