BACKGROUND The present study is an evaluation of a self-collected urine dip (SCUD) swab as an alternative sampling method for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) in urine samples that conforms to postal service regulations in Australia. METHODS Sixty urine samples, previously identified as CT positive were used to prepare SCUD swabs in vitro. In addition, replicate SCUD swabs were pre...

We evaluated a new automated urine sediment analyzer that provides whole-field images for the screening of urine samples prior to bacterial culture. Sterile urine samples from 1,011 male and female outpatients and inpatients (mean age 54.7) with a urinary tract infection prevalence of 18.3% were studied. Screening rapidly provides negative results.

Aberrant promoter hypermethylation of several known or putative tumor suppressor genes occurs frequently during the pathogenesis of human cancers and is a promising marker for cancer detection. We investigated the feasibility of detecting aberrant DNA methylation in the urine and serum samples of renal cancer patients. We examined the tumor and the matched urine and serum DNA for aberrant methy...

Two methods of simplifying the procedure for examining urine samples for Chlamydia trachomatis were investigated. When 73 urine samples from 56 men with acute non-gonococcal urethritis were examined by direct immunofluorescence (MicroTrak), centrifuging 1 ml volumes of urine at 13,000 rpm for five minutes was at least as efficient for detecting C trachomatis as centrifuging larger volumes at 30...

Two interlaboratory surveys of urine nickel analyses were performed in which eight or nine urine samples were distributed to laboratories in seven nations for measurements of nickel concentrations by atomic absorption spectrometry. In both surveys, wide discrepancies were observed in the values for urine nickel concentrations that were obtained in different laboratories by various analytical me...

The aim of the project was to evaluate the clinical value of a computer analysis of cytological specimen images obtained from urine and bladder washing samples. Three sample types (voided urine, catheterized urine and bladder washing) from 59 patients with primary or recurrent tumor were analyzed. All patients underwent cystoscopy and biopsy or resection. The histological results were compared ...

Federal workplace drug testing was initiated during the late 1980s. Since then, numerous methods have been employed to subvert these drug tests, adulteration of urine samples being the most common. A wide variety of adulterants has been reported to date along with suitable methods of their detection. Recently, websites have claimed that zinc sulfate can be an effective adulterant to bypass drug...

BACKGROUND Current UK guidelines for the identification, management and referral of chronic kidney disease advise an early-morning urine sample for the albumin:creatinine ratio or the protein:creatinine ratio (PCR) in order to quantify proteinuria. Estimated protein output (EPO) is an alternative and possibly better method of quantifying proteinuria which takes lean weight into consideration. ...

Due to the presence of PCR inhibitors, PCR cannot be used directly on most clinical samples, including human urine, without pre-treatment. A magnetic bead-based strategy is one potential method to collect biomarkers from urine samples and separate the biomarkers from PCR inhibitors. In this report, a 1 mL urine sample was mixed within the bulb of a transfer pipette containing lyophilized nuclei...
